Benq FP241W (Now available from OcUK!!!!!)

dvi cable

I got the fp241w a couple of days ago. It had a bizarre problem with the dvi connection.
It couldnt hold the signal at high resolutions, in particular at native resolution.
The screen just blinked on and off. It turns out the the reason was the supplied dvi cable which was to flimsy. I bought a better cable and now everything works fine.
This issue was not known to the person from BenQ support that I spoke with on the phone.

Unfortunately I got a pre firmware fix model, so it will go back (not from OcUK).
BenQ doesnt do upgrades in Denmark, where im living, so I would have to send it to the
UK for the fix. This I wont risk.

Looks like all is still not fixed with the Firmware, issues with 1080p sources and 1:1 *still*:

(I realise this one above is a retailer but its in Canada and not a competitor as such, its got decent info on the problem and the fact BenQ seem to be aware and looking at ANOTHER firmware fix)

*sigh*

There is one issue with 1:1 mapping and that is with the Xbox 360. For some reason it will sometimes output at 1680x1050 when set to 1920x1080 (hence the black borders all around the image)

Microsoft have said they are working on patching this.

Its not just the 360 that has the problem though by the looks of things. From this NCIX pages:

I should have made myself clearer: I know nothing about video games, or Xboxes, or what this monitor does with analogue signals.

I am indeed saying that a 1080p signal (i.e. 1920 across) via HDMI (from DVD, HD-DVD/BD, or, I gather PS3) is displayed in 1:1 mode with 2cm black bars on either side of the image, even though this monitor is itself 1920 across.

It might be the same thing, but it isn't necessarily - it depends what the monitor is actually doing to the signal it receives. That is why I talked to BenQ. If Aspect mode just were 1:1 by a different name with 1080p, I assume they would say so and just apologize for the confusion. But that's not what they're doing. They're preparing what they amusingly call a "second upgrade" to display 1080p at 1:1.

The whole "first upgrade," long-awaited and confirmed at the top of this page, appears to have been dud: the monitor does not do 1:1 pixel mapping. The reason people haven't been complaining, I assume, is that they get the size and shape of image they want with Aspect mode and don't think about it again. Of course, this is not unreasonable. It borders on inconceivable how BenQ could have gone through all the trouble of recognizing the problem with this monitor, creating a fix, having thousands of these things shipped back and forth, and never once just plugged in a 1080p source to see what it did. I myself was seriously considering that I had somehow fundamentally misunderstood what 1:1 pixel mapping is supposed to be.

I am confused, I am waiting to see if any PS3 owners post on the Hardforums regarding the BenQ monitors.

Is it not known whether the BenQ cuts the picture to make the black frames, or compresses it slightly? Is this problem also present in aspect mode?
If not it may not be a serious issue, since you could just opt for aspect mode when using 1080p sources.

As for the problem with loosing signal, I did notice last night that the screen went black
for 1 second while playing a dvd from an upscaling player over the DVI input. I was not sure if the source of the problem was with the dvd player or the monitor (pre firmware fix).
If this is truly a monitor issue, it has the potential to be a dealbreaker. Having the screen
blink on and off a couple of times a day is annoying. There are heftier DVI cables out there, than what I bought, but one should remember that the Dell 2407 has no trouble keeping the signal with a standard cable.

hello all

here is quick pic of my panel, can you see the white spots in the middles of the screen?

does anyone else has this issues or similar with their panels?

Thanks

Is it correct to assume another firmware revision is on its way?

I'm tempted to buy one, but don't want the hassle of posting it back and forth until the 1:1 issues have been resolved.
