Best 50" TV for immersive cinema experience

I've got a smallish room that I aim to convert to a small cinema room, currently has just a sofa bed at one end and a chest of drawers at the other, have an old 43" TV currently.

It's next to my man cave which contains my pc etc so is quite a good space to use whilst wifey is watching Strictly, Jungle etc etc.

I'm looking for a 50" TV, will also have a surround sound setup, but looking for decent quality without breaking the bank.

I have the full sky package and all the usual apps.

Question is what would be the best TV for quality without breaking the bank?

Got a decent budget, room is quite dark, any recommendations?

What is your budget?

Different people have different views on what is meant by "decent" or "breaking the bank" so without any indication you'll get people recommending anything from £300 to £1000.

I'd be tempted by the Philips 806 for that money, if you're able to fit a larger screen in you can pick up a 55" LG A16LA for the same amount.

That said I'm keen on ambilight but it might not be your cup of tea.

Richer Sounds has it in at the moment for £899 and is offering a 100 day day trial, so presumably your money back with no questions asked if you don't like it after three months?

Tbh if you give them a ring they'll usually move on the price if you ask, or if you can find it cheaper elsewhere.

Our friends in the Rain Forest have it at that price now so might as well wait to see what Black Friday brings, would never have considered the Phillips so thanks again.

Will check out a few reviews but definitely looks to be a contender, Ambilight does look cool

If you can find somewhere local that demo's them it's worth taking a look, some aren't keen on Ambilight but I find it really improves my watching experience.

No worries, happy to help!

Thanks Lonewolf, will have a look at this but was looking at 50" maximum, we do have a 55" Samsung in the lounge so I might see what it looks like in place, again might also see what black Friday brings

You could have a read of the following for advice

What is your viewing distance? 50" with 2:35 movies is quite small, not really immersive when it's something like 45" viewable. My last screen was 50" and it I wanted biggger, now have 65".

Distance would be around 2 to 2.5 metres from my chair to the screen, this is flexible though.

Just told the wife I might try our 55“ Samsung in the room to see what the size looks like and she’s rolling her eyes, not sure she understands

Put on a high ratio movie ;-)

Then say "look how small that movie is"

The thing to do is take your wife to a Currys or JL, and show her 75 inch TVs.

Then show her 55 inch TVs, and they'll look tiny by comparison. Even 65 inch TVs look small - that's how I managed to sell an upgrade from a 55 to 65 inch :p

"Gosh the 65 isn't actually that big, and the 55 looks tiny!", just after seeing an 83 inch OLED.

Around £800 but could extend this. £1000 max i would say
Have a look at the Samsung 50QN90B Neo QLED. It's £899 with a free sound bar offer, but I believe there's a Samsung direct deal too where you can get an extra £100 off for a trade-in of any old telly.

Ordinarily I wouldn't consider LED-based TVs ahead of OLEDs. The colour shift/loss when viewed slightly off access with VA panel screens is a problem for all but a few installation types. The alternative is an IPS screen: great viewing angles but the blacks are carp. This Samsung doesn't have the same issues. Fantastic contrast and no problem with off-axis viewing.

Theres a very thorough review on the rtings Web site. They also do mini comparisons with all the front runner sets including OLEDs.

Theres

, but this one

I've got a QE55QN94A in my lounge, love it. When I bought it I was torn between that and the LG OLED, went for the Samsung as that room is very bright.

The converted bedroom isn't so looking potentially at something that does darks better, such as perhaps the OLED, or the Phillips originally mentioned.

Keep checking to see if there are any early Black Friday deals, price is always a factor.

1 in 20 chance to win your money back on some models at currys

Wonder if you can return if you don't win your money back
