So booted up and the BIOS pings up with an smart error message, never cought 100% what it said as i shut down very quick.

So she is on her way out what i need to know is does anyone have an idea of an app i should use to see what is on that drive?

I'm not worried about getting any data off just want to know what was on it, also should i run it as an internal drive or have up hooked up externally, also would it help having it running of the intel SATA ports or does that not matter

MB is an Asus Z87 Deluxe and HDD is a WD40EZRX taken out of an Elements external drive.

Hi All1.

It's a good thing that you're not that concerned about your data and sorry for having to deal with this issue.

Basically, if it's not a faulty cable or port, it doesn't really matter which one you'd use and if you'd connect the drive internally or externally. However, I'd still recommend that you give it a go with a different port and cables, to see if you have better luck with accessing the HDD.
If that doesn't help you could give it a go with Ubuntu Live USB/DVD, to see if the drive is properly recognized and accessible.
You could also try some of the suggestions from this article: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/filerecovery/tp/free-file-recovery-programs.htm.

Hope this helps. Please let me know how it goes.

I've found that Windows Explorer is your worst bet for doing this..

Connect drive via USB to a Windows machine, get the program 'unstoppable copier'

Don't use the 'browse' feature within it, but paste in the DIR of the faulty drive as the source.

ie.

F:\

Then put C:\restored (or whatever) as the destination, set it to fast mode, then click copy.

Managed to recover a whole drive using this method at least twice in the past.

If I told Explorer to browse the drive it would just hang Explorer.

I recently had two HDD die on me, or so I thought, some sort of virus attacked my drives.

I used Minitool Data Recovery. You get the software, burn a disc and boot from the disc so it bypasses Windows.
It worked really well and I recovered ALL my data. It was slow though but as long as it works.

One tip when booting from the disc have the drive you want to recover as well as a drive to recover the files to already plugged in.

OK thanks for your tips guys, it's a 4TB drive that has gone, and don't have a spare 4TB hanging about so i have just bought a 4TB WD Black (£200 ouch!) and will start work on it as soon as i get the drive on Thursday, give me some time and i will post back with results, fingers crossed for me.

In future, have a backup of your data!
I do to some degree about 60% but it's not the physical stuff on there that bothers me it's not knowing what i have lost if you get my drift, also not everyone can afford to spend £400 on a twin set of 4TB's

Anyway she is here now so let the work begin:(

Any time you buy a data drive, you should buy a second one for backing up that data. 4TB is a crazy amount of data to have 'in one basket'
