Best bang for buck CPU - i7 4790k upgrade

OK could be SpeedFan issues - is there a better CPU temp app?
Just google - HWinfo.
install it hen when you open it you get a small box asking with info you want tick sensors only

i had a 7600x overclocked with a peerless assassin 120, your CPU as more cores but there is no way it idels at 60, they do tends to be warm at high 30's but under load the most i would see is mid to high 80's and i was pushing the CPU for all it had

Cool thank you - will give that a go and see what it says. Like I said, I wasn't sure on the cooler being fit for purpose but equally my Artic Silver 5 being 13 years may be an issue too

I also did the old tried and tested "pea size blob" which may be an antiquated approach, too.

The thermal paste included with the Thermalright HSF's is good stuff, I'd not even bother with anything third party as the actual benefits are somewhere between marginal and non existent for 99% of users.

Application methods have changed over the years too, the "pea" thing doesn't necessarily work out with some newer CPU's due to how the hardware is laid out under the IHS. Hell, it was a borderline overstated myth in the past anyway, make sure there's decent coverage across the IHS.

Are you on an Assassin King (single tower/fan) or one of the dual tower variants of the HSF? Also hold in mind that under load is what counts, and without knowing your case setup and ambient temps being worried about the CPU idle temperatures doesn't say much, they're far from in the danger zone anyway.

Ah ok fair enough. I might swap that out and reapply following the latest guidance then.

The cooler I bought is the Assassin Spirit, so single 120mm fan. I had no idea I had bought a Noctua so I might swap that over and put the Thermalright on what bits I have leftover/Garage PC.

It should still be ample.

Also consider setting a PBO offset, you'll see reduced temps and potentially better performance to boot.

Just booted it up and blasted it with Prime95 for a min:

Turned off Prime95 and waited a handful of mins:

Looks like there is no emergency but I could do with reapplying thermal paste.
