Best Bang for Buck! Nvidia or AMD now..

You have already grabbed a 970 which is a fantastic card.

What resolution do you play at?

If you are a FPS gamer then your going to want high frames for a smooth gaming experience.

The 4690k (fine for gaming with a single card) would knock the socks off your 750, especially with an overclock to say 4.5 - 4.7GHz

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/109?vs=1261

That shows the performance difference between the CPUs. No game tests but gives you an idea of where CPUs stand at the moment

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-4690K 3.50GHz (Devil's Canyon) Socket LGA1150 Processor - OEM £169.99
1 x Asus Maximus VII Ranger Intel Z97 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £129.95
1 x G.Skill TridentX 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C10 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit (F3-2400C10D-8GTX) £79.99
Total : £389.53 (includes shipping : £8.00).

Select your CPU cooler and that will do you fine.

Is that RAM any good? Whats the best make for the Asus board? Would a faster 16GB 2x8 be better?

I have the 16GB stuff and it's brilliant

Best ram i've ever used.

The 8GB stuff tightens up better

Sorry no offense meant. Bit of light humor as it's only graphics cards we are talking about. I can understand if you prefer one particular brand that it might be annoying.

If I look through your posting history, it is all anti nVidia and all pro AMD, so I can understand where you are coming from ;)

It is all good to have an opinion but to ram it down everyone's throat at every given opportunity becomes tiresome and unneeded. Sure I can't stand AMD but I don't feel the need to jump into thread after thread telling everyone that :D

I actually don't prefer one brand above the other believe it or not but I am not too fond of Nvidia's pricing over the last few gens as you well know by now. :) I will try to refrain from making light hearted jokes about it as it may become quite annoying to those who prefer Nvidia. What things annoy you about Amd? Maybe Amd are better at covering up the annoying things to me as the only thing I can think of is that they sell rubbish ref coolers on their cards. As well as Nvidia's tactics on pricing and milking architecture twice I don't like them barring Amd from certain things and charging for other things that Amd offer free. These things stick out like a sore thumb to me so it's hard not to notice.

I do like a bit of overclocking....:-)

I could spend a little more in getting the 8gb 2800 or 16gb 2400?

I have the 16GB and it doesn't tighten up as much as the 8GB sticks.

Not a major issue but depends how keen you are to 'tweak'

I went with the 16GB purely because the prices were decent and with DDR4 coming out the price of DDR3 could go higher as demand increases and production switches over.

Yeah I have shares in nvidia that's it . I haven't insulted anyone, don't post rubbish if you don't want to be called out on it. The only one having a go is you, multiple threads over the past few days you keep repeating the same thing.

If nvidia's prices were a problem for the majority, people wouldn't be switching from 290's to 970's and 980's. There's only you and a small portion of people on here who seem to take issue with it. The way you talk it's as if the only people buying nvidia cards are loyal customers who upgrade every time a new card lands.

Its finally time to completely upgrade my rig. I'm going to build it around the GPU as I use my PC for gaming.

The last card I purchased was a 5870 so I'm a little behind in the game!.. lol

With the lastest games out, Dead Rising 3, Middle Earth, Wasteland 2, Metro Redux etc. I'm basically an RPG/shooter. What GPU/system would you recommend....? Its a minefield out there.

I dont need to buy straight away but in hte next 3 months or so and I would want to spend no mre than about £800.

Biggest choice is Nvidia or AMD?

If you can wait 3 months I would suggest waiting for Amd's 390 as you will get 30%-50% more performance than the 970 for the same money. If Nvidia release a full fat Maxwell at the same price as the 970 then if you prefer to go for that do so.

Any info from AMD to back that up? I have looked on AMDs site and nothing hinting at that and the supposed leaks look like mock ups for site hits.

Genuine question.

Amd usually give a sizable performance increase each new gen. They probably won't be able to match Nvidia for power consumption but as long as they don't take a leaf out of their competitors book and do what they have been doing most gen's it should be a good increase. If you don't know real spec's you have to judge by what they do normally. Can't see them launching the 390 at the same performance as the 290 or only a bit more as that would be suicide.
