I was looking at the 360 controller, i have 2 wireless ones already for my 360 but think it might be better to try for a wired one for pc? batteries are actually a pain with these controllers

or are there any better ones?

btw, can rumble be turned on/off at all? or does it only work with windows games anyway?

cheers.

If you've got the pads, wouldn't it be better/cheaper just to buy the wireless receiver?

Rumble is it bit finnicky I've found. I had it working for my PSX/N64 emulators at one point, and now it seems to have stopped again. I think that's because I'm not using the XBCD drivers any more though.

Also, while I'd recommend the 360 pad for certain emulators (namely those using analogue sticks), do remember that the d-pad is pretty bloody awful. You can jig it so the left stick works as the d-pad, but that still feels a bit weird on some games to me.

If its' for an emulator and hence you'll need the dpad then you'll be far far far better served with a ps2/3 pad and a joybox converter. Xbox360 d-pads are awful (good pad aside from that though).

Although the adaptors+PS2 pads are not good for 2d Streetfighter type games, there seems to be a tiny microsecond of lag which makes pulling off special moves frustratingly difficult.

On a similar note, I bought a PS2 pad adaptor from *online competitor with 4 letters in its name based in jersey* ages ago. Recently tried to get it working on vista64, but buggered if I can find any drivers for it, let alone ones that work. Anyone got any ideas? Cheers.

One of the smaller original xbox controllers would do the job. Good quality and can be had cheaply. You'd just have to buy (or hack) yourself a standard usb converter.

The converters I've used have no problems with lag or with Vista. SuperJoy Box is the name of it I think. Seems far superior to some of the other converters I've seen friends using.

Note: I don't actually really like ctrlaltdel but the original xbox controllers were pretty huge/heavy weren't they?

by original I meant original xbox, not specifically the original controller. The version 2 (I'll call it that for arguments sake) was significantly smaller (by comparsion to the version 1 at least). There's bound to be some aftermarket ones that are even smaller.

Ah right. I wasn't aware of those :)

My comment was mostly tongue-in-cheek anyhow :p

Coming back to serious thoughts on the issue though, I'd have thought the d-pad on those controllers was of similar quality (or lack of) as the xbox360 ones? Have to admit, I haven't tried using the original xbox controllers for anything other than xbox games... I've got some xbox360 pads but far prefer my ps2 pads for emulators (or even my N64 pads).

The Xbox S pads had pretty awful d-pads too though. Not quite as bad as the 360's, but no great shakes either.

Why is it only Sony have done a decent d-pad in the last two generations? :p

EDIT: Oh actually, the Wii's Classic Pad has a quality d-pad, but that's no good for this thread!

I think there's some third-party stuff for the remote, but I don't think they've bothered doing anything for the classic pad.

Ah right. That's a shame if the dpad is actually good :)

That said, I defy one to be much better than the black ps2 dualshock pads I have. It's such a joy to use them after struggling with the xbox360 pad on snes games.

Wireless X360 pad works fine with Amiga, C64, AtariST & Megadrive emulators you can always use the free xpadder util to configure buttons/axis etc etc anyway.

The pad works okay but the dpad is dodgy as hell - try using the 360 in a game where accurate control is needed and then try a ps2 pad. You'll see a huge difference.

So i should go for a PS2 pad then?

i was thinking stuff like Zsnes for when i sometimes play mario games online, or the odd few n64/dreamcast games

so really need one with a good dpad and analogue stick

360 pad is best for emu's imo except for beat em ups as has already been mentioned but if you wanna play those then an arcade stick is by far the best solution anyway

I bought a really cheap PS2 copy pad for playing emulators and its great. Apart from not having the symbols on the buttons (circle, square etc.) as I would guess sony owns the copywrite on these, it works excellent playing nes, snes, PS2 or any other emulator with no lag. No rumble but you can pay a bit extra to get one.
