Best defragging software?

Just a quickie, what is the best defragging software or should i just stick to the windows one?

i think the whole defragging thing these days is a right can of worms...

many studies I've read say it can degrade performance. I think at end of day with regular housekeeping and not letting your sys drive fill to brim it's hardly needed and not a thing you need to go crazy with like the old days when drives were slow.

I know on windows 7 windows defrag is by default scheduled once a week.. im sure vista is the same but not positive. all you need really


edit: thinking about this more, say you do a full defrag inc space... now no file can expand or be modified with fragmenting, or contracting without leaving more space. i think I remember reading the more you defrag the quicker it refrags :). maybe my logic is flawed

Cheers for that but i have had my pc a few months now and no defragged it but i have recently noticed that start up, shut down and the retrieving of files/going through folders is much slower than it use to be
 
Only SSDs where defragging decreases performance. Depending on your file arrangement it is possible it will refrag quicker after defragging, but only if you have lots of files that increase in size.. and most important* files don't (e.g. exe/cab files), so it matters not.

*files you would notice if they were fragged
 
Thought I'd post in here since it's related, for JKDefrag, what would you say is the best method of defragmentation, does not matter about speed, just the method that does the best job.

Best defragging software by far has to be O&O Defrag, latest is number 11, it costs 49 Euros, not sure what that is in pounds sterling but ive always used it going back about 5 years now and it defrags your drives upon boot, before windows starts up.
Its worth it IMO but in the end its up to you.
 
If I had that much to spend on defragging software, I'd have enough money to buy an SSD instead. Five years ago it would have been different of course..
 
If you're using Windows Vista or Windows 7, then I see no reason to use any of these defragging programs that you can get. The inbuilt solution is perfectly fine and more than efficient. In fact, you don't even need to worry about it since it's scheduled to run every week.

I have never understood the fascination of watching a program move colored boxes around and seeing which areas of your hard drive are more fragmented than other areas and how long I will have to wait until I can use my computer again. I don't want to be sitting there waiting for the process to complete, I would rather be using my system for things that I would like to do.

If it defrags your drives before Windows boots, doesn't that slow Windows start up times though?

The whole purpose of defraging your hard drive is to improve system performance which the inbuilt solution will take care of absolutely fine. These programs may well show how fragmented your hard drive is but I'm not sure this will consistently translate into how your system is actually performing under real life situations and until the performance of your system starts to suffer and is noticeable, I don't see any reason to worry about file fragmentation beyond that of the inbuilt tools.

I certainly have nothing against these third party programs, I just find them slightly unnecessary especially since the tools that are built in are more than sufficient. :)
