Best first 600?

I went straight onto a CBR600. I had never even sat on a bike before my 4 week course and have found it a great bike.

A mate has an 04 Ninja 636 and I **** my self taking it for a ride, he's completly stupid riding without restriction and like a tit, he's had no end of problems with it lately though.

Mine was an 06, it's different than the 04 in many respects from what I know, so my be less problematic than you mate's, although he sounds like a bit of a tool; that's if I've read your post properly and you mean he should be riding restricted but isn't.

As a first bike, if you're after a sports model, the 636 seems to be very highly regarded :)

I'm enjoying my Kawasaki ER-6f atm.
My first big bike after the CBF125 I learnt on :)

How did you find the transition from the CBF to the ER6f?

I did my CBT in November and have been riding around on a CBR125 since but now that the weather is getting better I'm thinking of doing my proper test and getting a bigger bike and the ER6f caught my eye.

I was extremely nervous at first, it has heavier steering etc, and I'm only small  But I got used to it very quickly. And now, after clocking up 2500 miles on it it's a very comfortable ride :) I guess your muscles adapt over time to the extra weight etc.

Restricted you still get a large acceleration boost from a 125, but not so much that you'd accidently whip the front wheel up.

Edit: Added some pictures of mine to THIS. thread btw.

The bags seem quite pricey though, Ive always used the magnet versions, one I got from Aldi or Lidl few years ago is still going!

Can you secure lock them to it? or could anyone just unlock them?

Anyone could pull the cord and walk off with it I guess.
You can lock the bag itself though.

I tend to only keep a few snacks and a drink in there for longer rides though :D

Edit: Actually, if you took off the pull-cord before mounting, it'd be very hard to remove without a tool...

Looking to moving upto a 600 later on in the year from a Yam TZR125, what are my options realistically as far as not killing myself but still being fun, fuel consumption and insurance.

I've got my eye on the Bandit 600s as they seem reliable from a friend owning one, a doddle to restrict and cheap on fuel and insurance.

What other similar bikes are out there, and is there anything I should be looking out for?

Ballpark figure on a Bandit for insurance was around £380

SV & Bandit are both guttless. ER6 is awesome but also gutless. Go for anything with 100hp if you want to not be bored in 2 weeks.

You won't kill yourself. You'll respect the bike and know your limits.

Thats all good and well about them being gutless but I'm 18 and will be riding 33bhp restricted anyway as I dont fancy the chances with losing my license

Any 600 is ok as it's just your right hand that controls how quickly you crash. Be sensible and observant and you'll do grand.

the 4 cylinder 600s are quicker than the 650 vtwins however its the noise, feel and lightness that makes them a better choice. if you're not doing 100mph everywhere they are fine.

This sort of attitude doesn't help anybody.

Really? I never once found my Bandit remotely boring after 16 months of riding. I was having fun on it till the day it was stolen. Found it a great bike to get around on and actually have fun with. I'd quite happily have another Bandit in my collection. Not that I have a collection as of yet :p.

Honda CBF 600 is my current 600 and first 600.

Cheap to run, a lot of fun. I'd recommend it.

Also if you're big then avoid fared bikes such as 600RR GSX600-R etc. Extremely uncomfortable I found which was sad as I had my heart set on a GSX :(
