Best format to save CV in?

The big problem with doc, is that it can utterly screw up formatting between different pieces of software. I once created a document in pages, saved in doc and it was utterly messed up when opened in word. So pdf, it stays the same no matter what software it's opened in. It's a fixed layout format, which .doc isn't.

Also latex, for academic cvs which mainly outputs pdf...

pdf, always, because no matter what version of Office the potential employer has, the format and look of the pdf will be unchanged. You can't always be certain of this with a .doc.

PDF! Keep a word copy to edit, and when you want to send it save as PDF in word.

New office programs have PDF in the save as, however you can get an update free from microsoft if its not there.

I'd be a bit worried if Becky on reception had anything to do with CVs

should be HR -> hiring manager

If going via an agent then you've got a bigger risk of the agent messing with it - probably better to use a PDF in that case.

No...No...NO! For anything remotely technical it should be your prospective manager -> their boss -> HR (to send out the paperwork). Unfortunately it doesn't normally work like that, much to the annoyance of a lot of technical managers and prospective employees.

I use a combination of word and PDF depending on how I feel on the day.

Doesn't excel have far more mathematical errors than open source alternatives? Namely Gnumeric...

Doesn't matter if it does or doesn't - fact is it already exists and isn't going away any time soon - far too many man hours already put into existing spreadsheets at many companies... you won't replace it overnight.

Should be as in how it generally works not how it might be nice to work.

You're average technical manager doesn't have time to screen 200+ CVs - some sort of intelligent HR filtering often needs to apply

main point I was making was that its got naff all to do with some bint in reception

I work for an IT Consultant/Support company and the amount of people who call up saying they cant open PDF files is pretty shocking.

Once got a call saying a PDF was corrupted. Logged into their PC had a look around and they had been trying to open it with Word
