Best modern RPG?

I enjoyed single player NWN2 but online was a huge disappointment :/

I racked up 100's of hours online in nwn1 with all the player made mods :)

Single player was good but kept getting bugged and it ran like hell on my pc, which can run anything on it lol

Im gonna give the witcher another go, ive only go to act 2 then i had my hard drive die on me. I aint played it with the enhanced patch so im dl that now. Is there a big difference now, and does the game get even better after act 2.
I always liked the game there seemed to be a lot of decisions to make and cause i didnt get far i never got to saw the consequences.

Mass Effect... Fallout 3... Oblivion... Morrowind... Neverwinter Nights...

But just to throw it in, Titan Quest (with Immortal Throne)
I've been playing it since finishing this years Exams and I'm just loving it. It's not as immersion as RPGs, more Hack and Slash genre but GOD does it take up a lot of my time and I love it!

If you want a J-RPG in the vein of the Final Fantasy games, then the most modern one you can get at the moment is the PC version of The Last Remnant which is far better than the Xbox 360 version in almost every way.

Otherwise for tradition Western RPG's, all the suggestions that have been mention above will be good, Fallout 3, Oblivion, and especially Mass Effect as you like space themed games so mch.

The weird thing is that it ran far better on my older slower PC than my current one. Horrible horrible engine and as someone asked, yes it still looks modern.

And how can I forget Fallout 3 which is also good though admittedly I have not finishing due to it being way too easy.

ME2 coming out this year. Get around to finishing ME1 so you can use your character data in new game :)

Yeah I know, I got really far in the 360 version - then the PC version came old. So I traded in the 360 version and got it on the PC because it was better. Now I am at the start and haven't bothered to go further :p

How is it better apart from the graphics as I tried it out on the 360 and did not like it.

Simply because it runs faster due to better and more optimised performance and the added Turbo mode is a handy feature.

There is still popup and texture loading every now and then, but that is due to the way the Unreal 3 engine works, and is pretty evident from any other game that uses this. Still, it's not as bad as the 360 version.

Mass effect on pc was fun when i discovered the wonders of the console and getting stuff i couldnt get on the 360 shame i had played it to death on the 360. I wanted it to be modable :(

I think it was the developers rewarding players for buying it when it came out originally. They didnt wanna screw the people who supported them to begin with out of new content. Nice people that they are. :)

Not only nice, but saviours! My normal version of the witcher would not run on my pc at all, got it all patched with the enhanced edition update and it works fineeee :D

Deus Ex. Not modern but still beats the crap out of most RPG's around. I think it still stands up pretty well graphically.

I'm playing through this again at the moment, as I seem to do every few years once I have forgotten the storyline!

It is immense, best game I have ever played.

Sadly there are only a few good RPGS of the modern era.

Please for the love of god ignore all the claims to play witcher, its the most boring, linear and uninteresting tripe of a game. Everything about it boring, potion making, skills, combat, graphics, story.........its terrible.

I would definitely recommend Mass Effect and the X series for space based. Mass Effect being one of the best RPGs in the past 5 years.

Then you have other RPGs like oblivion, fallout 3, fable 2.

Tis an oldie but Baldurs Gate 2
Epic Epic game with dozens of hours playtime

Or you could play
Baldurs Gate 1 -> Expansion -> Baldurs Gate 2 -> Expansion

Taking your one character from game to game
Ahhh I think I need to have another playthrough. Its been a while

How about Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (I and II).

Not exactly that new, but still hold up okay graphically I think , and very immersive games. They reproduce the Star Wars universe really well. The second game feels a bit rushed in places, and the ending is disappointing, but both are definitely worth playing in my book.

Personally I didn't like KOTOR - I hated the way the combat system wasn't real time. I do however love Fallout 3 and Oblivion. I played X2, enjoyed it loads and always meant to give the later games in the series a go but haven't got round to it yet. Never played Mass Effect but because of this thread I intend to now...
