Best Nvidia card for WoW

There are a few B-grade GTX970 cards for £240. I would not pay more than £160ish for a GTX960(which you can get for that price). If spending £200,the OP might as well get the GTX970 if they really only want Nvidia.

But TBH again what are these problems??

Given the OP wants to be able to play other games, I wouldn't buy a GTX 960 as it only has 2 GB VRAM unless I needed to buy right now. If I could wait a little, once AMD release the 3xx cards the GTX 970 should come down in price.

I actually had issues in WoW with my 290 before I sold my old PC off and downsized. No real issues (other than heat :D) in any other games.

No such issues with my 760. Like Uber says, it's just general knowledge that you're less likely to get issues with nVidia in that game. That's the way it's been. No smoke without a fire and all that.

My 760 handles WoW on max settings in raids just fine so I wouldn't recommend anything above that tbh.

Edit: just read the future proofing thing and it's always a difficult one. For £200 you aren't going to get any degree of future proofing really but a 960/970 are a good deal faster than what you currently own.

290X here and intel i5 3750k @4.5 and zero problems with WoW and run at 120 FPS pretty much all the time only see small drops in built up areas but nothing major not seen sub 100FPS yet. Btw this is running DX11 as well not DX9 so maybe this is the problem as i got problems where i was getting 45-60 ish FPS with DX9 which was weird and probably just a CPU bottleneck with 1 core.

Also like to mention i'm on the Latest drivers (14.12 omega)

Thanks for the many responses, didn't mean to start an AMD vrs Nvidia war but at least it made what I thought was going to be a boring thread a little more lively.

The reason I have not gone into any detail about the issue is that for the last couple of years I have tried just about every fix that has been posted on the internet. Trust me I am not just throwing money at something due to some knee jerk reaction.

As Ubersonic stated:

'As for your friends they were lucky, simple as, many AMD users don't have issues but most people who have issues are AMD users. Back in MoP The were widely documented issues with the HD7900 series in WoW causing system lockups (sound would continue working but system would become unresponsive) which took AMD over a year to fix (and to this day they have never acknowledged the issue).'

Exactly this^ !!

There are still posts on the technical forums in regards to this problem, which AMD/Blizzard have chosen to ignore as the small percentage of users it affects does not warrant the expenditure to fix it.

My 7850 is a great card, I can play most games I am interested in at 1080 with a FPS that I am happy with and I did not have this issue with WoW I would not be thinking of replacing it just yet.

I know I would get more bang for my buck with an AMD card but I really don't want to risk the same issue again, once bitten twice shy I guess.

I have been checking my finances and could stretch to £300 but would prefer not to go that high.

The 960 looks a nice card but like many people have stated, it is a little undergeared for the price and not very future proof due to only 2GB ram

I did have a look at the 970 but yet again there seems to be a stutter issue with it whilst playing WoW which makes me reticent about buying one and replacing one issue with another.

So still open to suggestions =)

There appear to be a load of gigabyte windforce 290s in the clearance section for £149.99

Bargain if they're available at that price.

If you're set on buying new, £200 is a bit of an awkward price point. I get that you've had compatibility problems with your main game, but it's very hard to recommend a 960 (the only new nVidia card available in that price range) because to be honest it's really not a very good card for the money.

A second-hand 780/Ti would be what I'd spend my money on.

I've just done a quick Google on your stuttering problem, and it seems that the stutter may be due to the WoD expansion pack and nothing to do with the GPU. See this thread here.

I don't have the stuttering issue, it's something I have seen reported about the 970 card, however it looks to be a little more widespread than that card.

The 960 is too slow and too weak spec wise in today's standard at its asking price, and 970 is too expensive what it is...it should really had been labelled as a 960Ti at £200-£240 price range with its 3.5GB vram, rather than labelled as the "970" with the price to match.

In my honestly opinion, for your use you'd be much better off trying to find a 2nd hand GTX680 at around may be £100, and save yourself £100.
