What is the best thermal paste to use with my Corsair H70 over an i5 processor. I have been curious about these as I know it's really important to have a really cool processor for overclocking.

Rumour has it mx4 can defy the laws of physics.

Seriously though, mx4 is perhaps your best bet.

I use Arctic Cooling MX3, more out of habit then anything. Does a grand job :)

I believe there is only a tiny margin of difference between all the major brands

Have a go with your cooler and press down on a piece of glass/plastic. You want a thin film of it to cover the base of the cooler, without too much overspill.

Start off with a small pea ish size blob. If it isn't enough, use more or less if it goes all over the place :)

Cling film

Do you know of a tutorial for applying the solution to the top of the processor?

Over your finger, squeeze paste onto clingfilmed finger and spread evenly of processor OR

Use credit card to "scrape" thin layer over proessor OR

buy paste with applicator brush (like nail polish) and paint thin layer on.

Dont put too much on - just a very thin spread layer across surface.

OR Youtube.

I forgot about YouTube thats a great idea.

Lol another MX3 v MX4 thread starting I see. I am in the MX4 club here, but in fairness I am sure that MX3 will do a grand job too.

Used mx3 prior to switching to a prolimatech super mega cooler, had no mx3 left so used the stuff that came with the cooler (pk1 paste), seems on a par with mx3.

Pretty much all the top tier pastes will perform within a few degrees of each other, which won't make much difference when overclocking tbh. I would say the best performing paste would be mx-3, but it's also more difficult to spread out evenly than most of the others. You could also go the liquid metal route, which has even better temps, but is even more troublesome to apply.

99% of the time you will not notice or even need to notice any difference regardless of which type you use.

And you do not want to use a pea sized blob of TM at all. A rice grain size is all you need in the middle of your CPU and then fit the Cooler and it will spread perfectly. The point of TM is to fill the microscopic spaces between the CPU IHS and the cooler. It is not meant to be a paste between them.

I'm still on mx2 and it's been fine! But if buying new you might as well go for the newest. Temp difference between mx 3 and 4 is too small to notice in real world IMO.

Used MX-4 in a new build for my old man, and temps were amazingly low.

I don't know if it was just me being surprised at how cool the Q9xxx chips run, but the paste surely helps :D

How would i go about removing the standard paste from my H70. Is there a special tool you use to do this or liquid maybe?
