I open up the 12-year-old Unreal Tournament and I just realise that it all stemmed from this, this was the ground breaker that so many games today are built on, from or otherwise have taken inspiration from in some way.
Leave it out, UT was hardly groundbreaking compared to stuff like Quake (the first true 3d FPS, that also gave us stuff like ingame console, tcp/ip multiplayer, clans etc etc)Certainly more of an evolution than revolution.
Personally I'd say Unreal is the best.
Tried to play it again when my computer couldn't play anything else but it's virtually dead with only a handful of servers filled with idiots who play the same maps over.
A bit exaggerated, even if it is down to two hundred or so servers. Then again, with the sheer number of multiplayer shooters being released each year, it's to be expected. The original's faring somewhat better (more variety in the servers and more players).
