BF4 CPU-Test: Windows 8.1 up to 50% faster compared to Windows 7

Hold on, I thought Windows 8 was meant to be turd? Is it just BF4 the improvement can be seen on? Or most games?

Windows 8 was never a turd in terms of performance or reliability, just the Metro interface was a turd.

The nay-sayers just labelled W8 a total turd down to one aspect of the whole thing.

Had better performance in most games since I switched over from w7.

When that 'one thing' is the entire user interface it's not exactly unreasonable to call the whole thing a pile of cack.

I don't know if it makes a difference, can't say I had a particular problem before or anything.... just saw this one day and gave it a shot.

Thx never even heard of parking and unpark before, but surely during BF4 or any intensive app/software if there is a need for all 4 or more cores they will simply kick in ?

Also one has to ask the question, do we need 4 cores on for surfing and typing on overclockers forums all day long :p

in my 3 main games i play all a lot better on win8

faster system and shut down and start up. only bad thing is the default start tiles which everyone just changes straight off the bat anyway.

I can't find anything conclusive online but this parking thing strikes me as something that isn't an issue at all and that you wouldn't gain any performance benefit from forcing your CPU to not use energy saving.

Hmmm, if you mean 1 click and you're onto Desktop without even touching the Metro a whole pile of cack then I'll have to disagree with you on that.

I'm not saying Metro is good, I don't use it and avoid going anywhere near it and I'm sure there are improvements in 8.1 when it official lands, but a whole OS is not based solely on a feature of the UI which doesn't have to be used.

You don't really fully escape from Metro with just one click. Lack of start menu, inconsistencies in the way that things are presented, etc are all other examples of cack. To be fair I'm talking about Windows 8 before the service pack...*cough* .1 release.

Personally I still plan to move to Windows 8.1 but I wanted to wait until the interface was improved (which it has in 8.1, to some extent at least) and for the stability issues I've seen on other machines running it to definitely be fixed (i.e. I'll let other people beta test it for me).

Upgrading is free through work so the only thing stopping me at the moment is laziness about learning a new interface and no real need to replace my Win7 install and go through the hassle of reinstalling apps/etc.

We use DX11.1, there are some optimizations in it (constant buffer offsets, dynamic buffers as SRVs) that we got in to the API that improves CPU performance in our rendering when one runs with DX11.1. This will be in BF4. Johan Andersson stated.

According to this benchmark found here, there is little to gain upgrading a 3570k to a 3770k for this game:

To be honest I am a little* worried with all these newly announced system specs (watch dogs in particular) recommending 3770 cpu's.... there inst much between the 3570k and the 3770k. The 3770 doesnt have 8 true cores, it doesnt even work like that. The PC will use 4 cores and THEN utilise the rest inbetween. So it's in effect exactly what it is, a QUAD core cpu, with software enabled cores.

I don't think that really tells the whole tale though (though might be different on Windows 8).

On Windows 7 I still get similiar numbers with HT on or off - which basically swaps my CPU between being similiar to the 3570 and 3770 but the difference in smoothness is... vast (with all 8 execution units in play its an order of magnitude smoother).

dont even go there its been proved many times often the ones trying to disprove run on i7s :D

only justifiable reason for i7 over a i5 in modern gaming is 2 gpus or more. in single card config no difference.

so many go on about ht thats bs aswell. often the people who bring ht up every time yep you guessed it i7 owners :D.

in bf4 these is no difference sorry 1-2 fps max ! even in 64 man games.

^^ In general gaming and possibly BF4 retail sure.

Just saying what I've observed from BF4 beta theres a reproducible night and day difference between running my CPU similiar to an i5 and running it as an i7.

Not trying to stir trouble (I have 3570k) just trying to see if there is any reson to upgrade is all.

I understand that at the moment there isnt a big difference between the 3570k/3770k - 4670k/4770k for current games, but next gen games, seem to be all coming out with recommend specs of cpu with 8 cores i.e 3770 and 8350, and Im just worrying that my little 3570k will get left behind.

I get the feeling it's all marketing. To sell cpu's, gpu's, win 8 anything to sell sell sell!

Id wait and see what the final game is like tbh. Bf3 ran fine for me with a single 670 on a 3570k. It was only when switching to sli'd cards that the i5 proved to be a bottleneck. Hence i switched to a 3770k. Can generate the same sluggishness in bf4 by disabling ht in bios on my current 4770k. But even when enabled, im still getting a bit of stutter, random fps drops and cpu spikes.

just spent last few hours reformatting and upgrading to 8.1 and the game is still a stuttery pos regardless of graphical settings... awful.

and to make things worse i now have windows 8 installed which is without a doubt the most horrible OS i've ever had the misfortune to use.

whoever came up with this metro rubbish needs to be fired and never given a job in UI design ever again, who the hell would ever use this stuff ? it looks so ugly and badly designed... they need to take notes from apple on how to design slick looking modern operating systems cause if this is their idea of slick then they can go **** themselves.

what a waste of my evening this has been.

I've tried it in the past and never noticed a difference.

tested it on
amd 1055t @ stock
4670k @ 4ghz

Maybe slower cpus see more difference though?
