BF4 CPU-Test: Windows 8.1 up to 50% faster compared to Windows 7

just spent last few hours reformatting and upgrading to 8.1

Is that a beta 8.1? I thought it was out in a week or two. Also you can remove metro so it boots right into a normal desktop like win 7, I have never ever used metro and I had win 8 since launch. Well not remove it as in uninstall but you can make it boot right to the desktop.

After having 8 for months now, what has become apparent is that I use it the same way as I did 7.

I have absolutely no involvement with the Metro stuff at all. At first I tried tinkering by adding my own tile shortcuts and what not, but with daily use it's simpler to click a shortcut in the taskbar rather than switch a screen and click on a huge tile.

All of the Metro apps suck, Metro interface sucks and using any of the settings interfaces inside Metro suck. (Control panel in there and what not)

I'm not bothered about the return of the start button seeing as all that will do is make it easier to remind me that the Metro eyesore garbage remains running in the background.

It truly is an awful launch menu.

^^ In general gaming and possibly BF4 retail sure.

Just saying what I've observed from BF4 beta theres a reproducible night and day difference between running my CPU similiar to an i5 and running it as an i7.

Tested this myself on my 3770k and exactly the same results.

Could just be the game though.

Bench run with HT disabled. i7 4770k @4.5ghz. Gtx 670 sli at stock. 64 player cq server. Ultra, x4 msaa at 1920x1200.

Frames, Time (ms), Min, Max, Avg
10988, 180000, 6, 105, 61.044

Only a short run sure, but the fps drop is quite considerable compared to with HT enabled, probably lost about 20fps. Game was virtually unplayable, very jerky. Cpu use maxed at 99%, (65% normally), gpu's at 70%. Sli was enabled in that run, which is known to be hampered by an i5 in this. Ill try a run sometime with just one card if i get time.

single card configuration benchmark shown .sli is pointless ;) and not related.

as always single card there is no difference between i5 or i7.

2 cards or more yes there is a difference. no one argues that :p

ive seen three benchmarks now in two at the same rez the i5s actually were a little faster in single card configs in bf4. in the other the fps was so close between the i5/i7 that well call it a draw ( i7 was about 1and half fps quicker)

ive done extensive runs doing min max avg in domination 32 man , 64 man conquest and my fps is about 2 fps under the benched ones already done.

so i see them as very accurate. not only this my mates who i play with and one who has just had a i7 4770k haswell bundle @ 4.6 nets about the same fps as noted in the benchmarks aswell.

Yep, ill do a single card run with ht enabled/disabled. I also want to at the same time test my best clocking 670 in this beta. This means removing the lower card as it blocks the fans of the top one. Unfortunately in sli i have to run much lower clocks of +80/+600 to allow for the weak second card. The good one does +130/+760 at a breeze.

All these performance results absolutely scream beta to me. I'd be shocked if we don't see massive improvements in the final release.

thing is some of the optimizations are win8 only so as much as its only beta win8 will remain slightly faster regardless. also as i posted before some of my other games which arnt new now are actually better fps and smoother to play

This is what I was thinking

A few people I know have downloaded the win8.1 preview just because of the bf4 beta, formatting their SSD's in order to try it.
To me it seems a bit mad but I guess it shows dedication or maybe they only use their systems for playing BF4 beta

Great thread with some really useful information. And expensive, for me!
Thought I had better see what the crack was with upgrading to a 8 core cpu as it's looking like it's going to be the norm in the future. Damn. Socket LGA156. New mobo needed as well then. :(
Here we go again...

To some degree I agree, but that said, if there really ARE improvements in Win 8 that let it run faster (not 50% faster, that's clearly a bug in one version, but 5-10% maybe?), then what you're suggesting seems to be that they deliberately cripple the win 8 version to maintain partiy with win 7? Should the game downclock your Titan so it doesn't outperform my HD7850?

I'm not buying win 8 for a game, as long as it's playable on my current system (which BF4 is, based on the beta), but I don't see the point in your suggested boycott. Are you suggesting the discrepancy is deliberate in some way? Or that they won't attempt to address it if it's a bug?

A sorry I forgot you cant say anything in jest on here without some jumped up nerd taking everything you say and throwing some stupid hypothetical assumptions back in your face. Of course no one would expect them to do that? Are you for real? I was just thinking out loud how times have changed. Anyway I expect half of this is pure marketing. I also wouldn't take anything Dice and EA say as Jospel there a bunch of liars. You guys really do seem to have short term memory's.

What about people like me who have 580gtx's As far as im aware they don't offer dx11.1 or dx11.2 support ? so how would upgrading to windows 8 improve my performance ? It wouldn't would it ? Also with mantle around the corner isn't all this just a waist of time effort and money.

I'm a little bit out of the loop at the moment. But if you ask me something is a little bit odd and smells fishy, just like the original OP's bench results 1280x720p as a res really? that doesn't screw up the benchmarks in there favour much does it ?

The paranoid side of me asks How much did MS pay EA and DICE :D
The normal side of me just says :p

I would expect Win8 to offer some performance advantages over Win7, yeah - just not the kind of numbers that someone looking at the graph in the OP might assume (or the figures being bandied about here).

Unless someone has tons of spare time I wouldn't recommend they go through the hassle of an OS install in the hope of achieving a massive improvement in BF4. Sure, they may get a benefit during the beta and it's not a terrible thing to refresh your OS but you're not going to be missing out massively by sticking with Win7 - aside from perhaps during the BF4 beta.

Agreed. Personally I don't get it but to be honest it might have been different if I was 10 years younger. I certainly had a lot more free time and a lot more patience for things like this at least.
