Big 4 now the Big 5?

My mate whos a season ticket holder at Anfield showed me an interesting stat yesterday. Liverpewl had the most shots off target last season by far. So a lot is resting on Torres shoulders tohit the ground running. The interesting thing will be Voronin I think. If he gets a few then it may take a bit of heat off Torres
Rafa was saying the other day that we attempted the most crosses and had the most attempts on goal last year. The problem has been the standard of crosses and hopefull a fully fit Kewell and the new boys will help that. Also i don't expect much from Voronin, he's been brought in as 4th choice and is only likely to play cup and bit part of games (though he's been very good in pre-season).

There is no "big 5" in the league.
You are pushing it to even have a "big four" you can just about justify "the big three" in regards to the Prem.
Because in all honesty, Liverpool and spurs dont have a chance, because if united dont take it Chelsea will and Arsenal after a bit of tweaking are still easily a better league side than liverpool.

BaZ87, statistics mean nothing in a sport like football. It's not like athletics where you can say man A ran 200m in 19.9 seconds and man B did it in 20.2 seconds, therefore man A is better. So please, stop with the useless stats.

And also the 35million billion spent on Torres could have, imo been used to strength your team in other areas. Really the only difference between Bent and Torres is the 35million billion extra you paid for him, and that he is a 'big name', and that's probably only because he's good on football manager.

Personally, believe the Premiership is multi-tierd.

Manchester United and Chelsea, clearly the Big 2, with Liverpool isolated as the next challenger - they are steadily improving, and are starting to make significant investments in players.

I believe Arsenal are not in decline, but in transition - and perhaps will now be challenged by Spurs, who again, have huge investment potential.

There are then a number of clubs, such as Everton, Newcastle, Villa, West Ham, Blackburn who would have top six aspirations.

Sorry can you remind me who have been the top 3 in the last 2 season? So Arsenal are still a better league side despite coming behind us in the last 2 seasons and losing there best player?

Have you lost the plot or are you trying to be funny? Which stats have i given? Also you'll find we only spent £3m more on Torres than Sprus spent on Bent and we needed attacking players where as the 1 area where Spurs could already compete was there attackers.

20 million is by no means a lot to pay for a top class striker in todays market, we can't continue buying squad players and "potential" season after season if we want to challenge for the title. Torres is the type of player who can hopefully take us to the next level, and it's not like we blew all our budget on one player anyway.

Over the past 12 years if the big 4 is gonne become a big 5 the 5th team has gotta be the Boro ;)

As the saying goes, 'time tells no lies,' so we'll have to wait a year to see what happens.

However, if Spurs can start the new season as well as they finished last season i think there is a chance of getting 4th place. But they must tighten up a bit at the back as they gave away too many easy goals. Its a young squad though so the potential to improve is there.

I used to say there was a big6 (tb4 plus Leeds and Newcastle). Obviously those two have faded out now.

Spurs are the only side I can see challenging the top4 this season, although to be honest I think 4th place (ahead of Arsenal) is the best they can hope for.

If Liverpool or Arsenal perform aswell as they can then Spurs can't touch them. Football isn't quite so simple though and if either slip up and go on a bad run then Spurs, or even Newcastle will be in with a great shout.

I agree with this. Though I think 4th and down is a bit of a lottery. Liverpool, Chelsea and Man U have the top 3 sewn up, the rest looks very close to me. I still think Arsenal will be in with a big shout for a champions league place though.

I don't think Liverpool have shown anything domestically to be certain of a Top 3 finish. If the team are as **** sure and arrogant as some of their fans then I think they're in for a shock.

2 seasons ago we finished well ahead of Arsenal and the only reason they caught up last year was because we played reserve players for the last 6 or so games and ended up losing or drawing them. That coupled with us making greater improvements to our side (on paper anyway), is why i can't see it being a different top 3.

No I agree and think Liverpool probably will finish 3rd. I just don't think it's a forgone conclusion like the fact Man Utd and Chelsea will finish 1 & 2.

I certainly wouldn't put any money on them put it that way.

I think Newcastle have a great chance of being up round 4/5/6th...

If the squad stays lack of major injury.

Owen/Martins/Viduka has the potential of quite a few goals.

With 1 or 2 big improvements to the defence am sure we can be taken seriously again with Sam in charge and the big changes that have happened at the top.

Well I was extremely bored today so I did this, I originally planned to do 20 years but thought what the hell I'll do 30 years. Below are the final positions for each of the last 30 seasons in the top division for what I see as the current top 8 teams in England. I thought it was interesting that in the last 30 years Liverpool haven't finished below 8th and I'm sure that stat goes back much longer. (Go on Baz give me the figure you statto you! :p)

Scrap that. I initially guessed 63-64 when we won the league but it was 62-63 when we got promoted under Shanks.
