Big 4 now the Big 5?

The likes of Bale turned down chances to join other big clubs and big wages to join Spurs, as did Bent (wages anyway) and its rumoured that Berbatov turned down Utd to go to Spurs.

No player of a decent standard turned down other top clubs to join Newcastle, with the exception of Shearer who wanted to join his home town club. Owen only joined because he had no choice and iirc a few weeks before it became clear that Newcastle was his only option, he actually came out and said if he did join Newcastle it would only be on a 1 year loan.

Bale and Bent big players please.....

Bale dint turn down UTD btw. Fergi dint want to part with the cash but wanted a future progression deal spurs splashed the cash

Bale could have joined Utd had he wanted to. All he had to do is say no to Spurs and Southampton would have been in a position where they only had Utd to deal with and a deal would have been sorted, but Bale chose to join Spurs.

I didn't say either were top players just that they turned down other sides offering more cash to join Spurs, Newcastle can't say that.

Top player don't want to go to the north east and only do if they have no other choices.

Year right Southham is hardly going to let an asset like bale go for peanuts compared to the deal that was on offer. No matter how much a player wanted to go.....

Players make the decisions these days. I didn't say they would sell him for peanuts, but a deal would have been reached had Bale said he wants to join them.

You can keep going on about how Newcastle can afford and can attract top players, but the simple fact is you haven't signed any.

Oba Proven Goal scorer in Italy and proved it in the English league last year Inter don’t want him to go. We signed Woodgate when he was at the peak of his form which is better than most.

We just signed one of the best Defenders in the French league just because he don’t cost 20 odd million no fuss was made.

You can’t deny Barton talent. Just he has baggage

If Owen and Martins weren't top players when they signed who are?

And the likes of Deco said they would be very happy playing for Newcastle. weather he suited to the prem league is a diffrent matter but he is a top player in the world.

Top players (in other words the one who are in demand by various top clubs) will not join Newcastle.

Big Sam is bringing in the right players in our squad.

Who wouldnt want Owen, Martins and Viduka as strikers to choose from...

Im sorry but if anyone reckons they wouldnt they havent a clue. Owens and Martins if they stay free of injury have the potential to really terrorise defences.

If we bring in a couple more solid defenders, we arent going to be looked at as a comedy team anymore... We would have a good if not better chance to finish in the european places.

Things are all going forward for a change for this club... Unfortunately we have been touched by the curse again with the Barton injury which is a shame...

Barton is awesome :) Parker was a real let down...

Not sure with Dyer... i think id be happier if we cashed in on him.

In my opinion, Newcastle just need one season of genuine success to act as the blue touch paper.

Off the pitch, a monstrous club with the perfect infrastructure to be a real giant.

If they had won the league in the mid 90's, I'm pretty sure they would have pushed on and become a far greater success, but after the second season of finishing runners up, their spark seemed to die.

I don't believe the current squad can wish for anything more than top 6 or 8 at the moment - if Viduka gets a good start and his confidence is high, he can be a real asset.

The sooner they are rid of Dyer, the better.

They ran out of money.
Keegan nearly bankrupted them, they didnt recover till the last of the Robson years, they were still paying for some of Keegans buys when Robson took over.

Don't disagree with that; though the bit about the strikers, the top 4 would only want them in addition to there current players not instead of.

But there is noway Newcastle will find it easier than Spurs to attract top players, which has been claimed.

I dont understand why Spurs are putting themselves amongst the cream all of a sudden..

fair enough they might of done more than newcastle overall... but its not like they have been kicking about the top the last 10year...

They have only been good since Jol came

Updated one to include Aston Villa and Leeds who have won the top division in the last 30 years, thought they deserved a mention too.

Ipswich weren't bad in the late 70's/early 80's either - three times third and twice runners up in 6 years.. :o

but the past doesn't matter, Newcastle might have been a top 4 team once but they aren't any more. Where as Tottenham are currently very good, and are definitely a team on the up, they have top quality players all over the pitch and some outstanding youth, couple this with encouraging ENGLISH players playing for ENGLISH teams and theres a reason why they're my favourite team behind United.

Im not saying they will find it easier to attract players because of what they have done on the pitch, more to do with them being in London and foreign players not fancying the north east.

Martins was a regular for Inter Milan and Owen has proven himself at every level there is in football, regardless of whether clubs wanted to pay the price for him at the time he is undoubtably a top player.

Also our list of young players like zog/mils/Talyor/Edgar/Huntington/Carroll/Krul is very impressive

Be that as it may, if you look at the rivals (Arsenal and Spurs), would you say that their list of young players is any less impressive?

Clichy, Eboue, Fabregas, Diaby, Djourou, Van Persie, Bendtner, Walcott, Hoyte, Denilson, Adebayor, Eduardo etc

Bale, Huddlestone, Lennon, Dawson, Jenas, Defoe, Bent, Routledge etc

Personally I wouldn't rate those two sets of players aged 24 or under any worse than the toon crop.
