That's cracking value for an Ultegra SL'd bike. I assume it was on some sort of special offer?.

I was looking to sell on my 1 yr old Pinarello this month and grab another roadbike on the Cyclescheme but my HR department have banned those who purchased a bike last year on the scheme from getting another one for 2 years. Apparently they can't afford it as they seriously underestimated the amount of us who would sign up to the scheme. :(

Just fitted a new fork to one of my bikes too, a Reba Team 29er with Maxle.

Not having a QR front was getting annoying with the 20mm TA on my Manitou needing to undo bolts whenever the wheel had to come off for transport.

So out with the old, in with the new:

Gave it a good 3 hour test today at a place called Ringwood, otherwise the first ride would have been next weekend at the Shenandoah 100. :)

Sultan? Very nice either way :D

Looking to get a 29er myself, though could do without the 29er tax.

Was given an old Claud Butler about 6 weeks ago and have been hooning around on it to get my fitness up. The downhill/freeride stuff really interests me but with no prior experience it will be tough. Certainly wont be attempting it on the Claud :o

Full Suss 29ers seem rare and tres expensive.

I've been riding the Turner Sultan since the start of '07 and have had a Fisher Paragon 29er HT for about a year prior to that too, currently running it SS.

Looking at getting a bike, my budget between 350-450 give or take

im looking at this bike, CLICKY and knowing pretty much next to nothing bout bikes wanna know what people think

All i know is i want at least front suspension with lock out, and 27 gears :D

Or do people have better suggestions?

thinking of chopping my Giant TCR in for a mountain bike. Due to possible MS, suffering seriuos neuropathic pain in my right arm, which means using the drop bars/hoods gets too much for my wrist. All ready had to swap my mouse to left hand after 20 years of using it right handed.
Just going to have a look round and see what i fancy. Not a huge budget, but deffo wont get a BSO, got one of them from JJB a few years ago and its a <insert paul carf's catch phrase>. The rear disk brake can be full on and i can still pedal forward.

Looks like a reasonable spec for the price.
Try this. its a similar spec to the gt, slightly shorter fork at 100mm, still has lockout tho and looks better imo

I'v found this also. Looks like a lot of bike for the price but most places dont seem to have any in stock. This website seems to have stock but i'v never heard of them before.

What? It shouldn't be costing them anything!

I raised this issue over on the Bikeradar forums a wee while back and got this reply, it's how I understand the Cyclescheme to work :-

How it works, company pays cyclescheme the cost of the voucher up front, company gets the money back over the hire period by virtue of employees salary sacrifice, so the employers do take an initial hit, but they can also make money out of it because of the 12.5% employers NI contribution on the value of the voucher that they save.

So yes, your employers do take an initial "hit", sadly. :(

Ladies & Gents of the highly esteemed bicycle thread,

I'm looking for a bike for my Lady who will be using it for nothing more than some like exercise/fitness around the roads/country lanes of North Somerset.

She did have an old raleigh that did this job, but as her brother decided to borrow it and fall off of it at Crooks Peak (Large peak in the Mendips), the bike hasn't been touched for a year or so.

Popped it up to the local bike store who seem to think it will need new tyres, brake blocks, cables front & back, and a service which would cost ~£100 in total.

This seems quite steep (not necessarily in parts, but for the result I'm looking for - something that will ride for light/basic use).

I've seen some bikes new for around this price in halfords etc but they appear cheap.

Any ideas please? What would you lot be doing in my shoes?

p.s. responses like "Give her your Marin" are not acceptable :p

EDIT: Costs to be at the absolute minimum please :)

Couldn't you do this yourself?

Well you say that, but a quick totting up of costs:

2 x new tyres. ~£12.99 each

2 x new inners. ~ £4.99 each

2 x brake blocks. ~ 6.99 each.

New front brake cables. ~ £15

New rear brake cables. ~ £15

That's already hitting ~£80 without any other potential problems he may encounter i.e. chain looks suspect, cranks/bottom bracket a bit wobbly etc.

In addition to me having to do this and potentially not very well... You see where I'm coming from? :)

£30 for brake cables? It cost me £2 for gear cables and £7 for 2 inner tubes and puncture repair kit. The other stuff that could need specialist tools - fair enough.
