Gah - I hate racing...why do I do it to myself :9
Racing this weekend in the Southern Champs, wish me luck, or at the very least not to spangle myself on the jump in front of people! :D

Senior! Competitive cat to be in (im also in it). Hope it goes ok for ya! I managed 17th out of 60+ at welsh champs after a bloody crash :(

Hi Guys,

I'm not a big cyclist although i'm slowly getting into it and enjoying it so far.

I have the oppertunity to join my works bike scheme (although they're not that fussy if ride to work but I will be as it's a nice change).

I need some help picking out a bike. I can basically have up to 1K at Halfords. I currently ride ~6 miles per night on my small wheeled small framed hardtail Saracen Mantra which only has 21 gears and tops out pretty quickly.

The route I use is solid ground along a canal but it gets quite muddy in places. I could change this route and just use the roads though, but i'm undecided.

What would you guys reccomend? I'd like a road bike but I don't know if I'd get the best use out of it. I'd like something that could cope with the mild off-road I mentioned above and not scoot me off if I touch a bit of wet grass or whatever.

Cheers mate, all I wanna do is beat a mate of mine, whatever else happens is a bonus.

Out of the majority of my riding mates, I have been riding the shortest (period of time that is)
As such.. I have always been towards the back of the train of guys going down a trail.

In the mean time.. I have been improving much and now find that I'm held up by a few of them.
This one mate in particular, during our recent trip to France, called me back and insisted to go ahead of me down the French national.

I left a big gap and ended up catching him up - but that goes unseen...so now im out for blood and wanna take him down a peg :D !
During my very first race, after just getting my first full on DH bike... I beat him by a second which isn't a lot but considering hes had a few years on me, I was happy.

I MUST MAKE THIS 2/2 IN MY FAVOUR!

Haha. I used to race my mates at races (Still do) but gonna try get some decent results for next year. Just watch the racing bug dont bite, otherwise you'll be skint haha ;)

And across the line :D

If it's only 6 miles, then I would say you would get more benefit from riding a light hardtail MTB (harder going) than a road bike. The sort of terrain you are cruising on also sounds like it would be good for some knobby tires.

Halfords can source a lot of different bikes for you, not just what they carry in stock. In your budget I would say have a look at:

Boardman pro HT (Halfords)
Specialized Rockhopper
A Cube has been mentioned a few threads ago which seems to represent great value. Not sure if Halfords would be able to get one though.

If you are absolutely shure you aren't going to venture out into MTB/offroad riding (ride a few trails and you will be hooked :) ) then maybe maybe consider a hybrid, although I don't see the point of them myself :) Jack of all trades... :)

That looks the ****ing biscuit! Kinda makes me want to get a road bike but I don't think wearing baggy combats n hoody fits in with the whole roadie image. I guesss the pro bulge would work will in the skintight stuff. Mon the females!!!

Haha same although it makes your thighs look huge.
I actually have the 3/4 endura so damn nice lots of pockets and air vents which is nice.
I need some cargo/combat trouser full length or 3/4 which isn't easy to find.

Cyclocross bike is what you want. Whatever you do don't get a MTB unless you are going to use it as a MTB.

You can get a Boardman cyclocross bike from Halfords for under a grand (just). It is a good quality bike that is better equiped than its Specialized equivalent.

Thanks for the input guys.

Looking at my monies, i'm leaning more towards the £800 range and they do more or less the same bike minus two gears and a bit of carbon (here).

What do you reckon? Is there better equivalents for the £800 range (from Halfords) and will i miss the extra gears?

Well your best bet would probably go down there and try out both.
Just bring your wallet with drivers license/ID of some kind and they will let you ride it around the parking lot.

The disc breaks on the hybrid wasn't that great last time I checked.
It was like bending the disc instead of clamping it although it could be the demo bike was setup badly by Halfords.

I went from Hardtail MTB with front suspension(locked when not needed) so don't rule out hardtails they are extremely rugged with semi slick tyres
it runs pretty fast on all surfaces.
