I would say that unless the customer has proof of the damage then they wouldn't have a leg to stand on. Their word against yours isnt going to stand up in court. However, can you be sure that someone else hasn't damaged it whilst in your charge. If possible maybe fixing it under good will might help?

Gonna need more details tbh.

Pinnacle road bike comes in for a service and new 10speed chain. Boss books it in and I go with whats written on the book.

Took the cassette off cleaned it,took the hub to bits cleaned and greased it,cassette back on,fitted the chain with it being the correct length etc. Set the back brakes up and then move onto running the rear gear cable + new outers as they were rough. Go to poke the cable through the shifter and notice it isn't in 10th as the bit the cable end is help by isn't there. Go to shift down and it only moves two clicks and stops....still no sign of said part, shift up and it only moves two clicks again before stopping.

Phoned the customer that day(Thursday) and ask why it didn't have a cable on it when I started work on it and he explained the cable had snapped. On that I asked if he got the end of the cable out of the shifter before.....which he hand't so I explained it was probably that causing it to jam but I don't want to take road STI shifters apart as I've never worked on 105 shifters before and suggest that I let the guy in the next day do it as I know he has had his shifters in bits and to try and get the old cable out.

I find out halfway through the day after the guy had worked on it that he had it in bits and no cable was found and it still has the same problem. The customer phones not long after I found out and was still rather busy. He gets really annoyed and accuses me of of doing £200 worth of damage to his bike(i had said a pair of shifters of that qualiry were £200 - so £100 was probably likely for one shifter - so trying to fix them first might be better)

He claims I shouldn't have touched it if I wasn't sure to which I said I didn't I tried to feed a cable and left it at that. He is also raging that he needed the bike for tomorow for the Glasgow to Edinburgh run which he never mentioned when he brought it in(a week ago) and failed to mention again when I called and said about the problem with the shifter.

He then got really annoyed when my boss said he would only charge for him the chain which he now has but wouldn't give him it at cost(the customer asked). He failed to be reasonable and didn't ask for us to get him his bike usable for tomorow or to get a suitable bike until his is ready!

Jonny - Sounds like the customer is just ranting because he is annoyed at the delay. I wouldn't worry about what he says he will do - it's all hot air. The worst coming to the worst you can prove you have made a reasonable offer to him. You have covered your backs.

Just recovering from a 10hour team event at Chedder Bike fest 2009. We were Wacky Racers which you can find our results here:

http://www.timelaps.co.uk/assets/uploads/EventReport.aspx?eventID=90Cheddar12/09/2009

All I can say, the course was a VERY hard 4k, 3.9k straight up and 100m down

I also found it rather amusing that i was on my Enduro doing so much climbing. Anyway on to next weekend when ive got the Spambiking Blast which is a 75k or 100k mtb ride. All good fun!

What do people think? From the local shops I can get to try out the Trek 8000 '09, the Scott offerings, not sure if these are a decent choice. Also the Genesis core.

I was gutted today though, popped into a local store and they had the 09 Rockhopper expert for just over £700, would have bought it there and then but was already reserved :(
Have also considered the Cannondale F4Z and F4 but can't seem to find many left around the place.

i've just bought the trek 6000 and it seems to be a well balanced bike, i've not seen the 8000 but i can only imagine it'll be better with better components. The Scott bikes seem quite good too, the Cannondale, not sure how much it costs, i was looking at the F5 and the bike shop i bought my trek from advised me to steer clear of anything under £1k with Cannondales, and after feeling the weight, i could see why.

you thought about the 2010 rockhopper exeprt? Its a damn good bike for the money. I was trying to decide betweent that and a Cube. went for the cube at £893: Cube LTD Race 2009

Had it out today for a good 26 km xc run :) very pleased! Had my first biking fall too.. straight over the handlebars going down some scree :)

Nice :) yeah I was considering the Cube as well, sadly no where locally to grab a test of one, would love to go out on a limb and order one, if I could find anywhere that stocks them :p

The Rockhopper Expert does look nice, in all likelyhood I'll end up going for that. My dad has a Trek 8000 and it is very nice indeed so that may be a choice as well.

Anyone here have the egg beater titaniums? If so what do you think compared to the typical shimano spds?

I ride with Smartys, basically Eggbeaters with a small platform, and my friend has Eggbeaters. I'm going to move to shimano pedals when I get a bew bike, Crank Bros pedals are too loose. They're great for clipping out of quickly but feel vague when clipping in and are very easy to slip out of unintentionally.

I have the Eggbeater SL's and like them. Never ridden SPDs to compare against. With gear I am probably just over the weight limit of the Ti Eggbeater's.

They shouldn't feel vague when clipping in. I have had no problem with slipping out of them unintentionally either. Sounds like you just need to adjust your's some more.

Well just been having another think :) and am almost decided. Will go for the Specialized 2010 Rockhopper Pro, just over £1000 and the Shimano M520 SPD's if I can get that Cycle to work scheme, granted it's only a £1000 but hopefully I can work out something.

If I can't get that, I'll have to drop down to the Specialized Expert for £940 and maybe treat myself to maybe the Shimano 540s.

Gah really tough choices :( Don't really want to skimp on the base spec of the bike really.

So my Shimano 105 ST 5600 left hand shifter(double) broke today.
It is on the heaviest gear atm and the tension is still there however I can't
make it shift back to the inner ring. There is no click when I push the smaller lever and no movement on Derailleur.
Upon further inspection off the left hand shift lever when I took apart the break cable etc.
This small aluminium piece fell off from the shifter

so my questions is
is it beyond repair?
I don't really use the granny gear anyways can I convert my double chainset to a single one?
However I would prefer to be able to fix this.

thanks! I knew it should've gotten a campag set instead of shimano

No I'm not time trialing, Don't know why i went for flat handlebars i just wanted something different. Might enter a triathlon next year so the aero will come in handy.

I have TT bars on my Pinarello but I don't TT.

I find it gives an alternative position for you especially on long routes when you get to that "struggling to stay comfortable" stage. :p
