main difference is that the '2' has a hub with internal gears. the '1' is just singlespeed

the crankset and hubs are fine for what its supposed to be used for.

also. ws curious about uk prices and first link i clicked was evans cycles. they have the 23''

Ah, I missed that out. San Francisco 1 is what I'm after then.

It seems a lot of bike for the money, I can find 21" for around £265, but the 23" at Evans is £329. The chances of this still being around by mid Jan when my cycle to work scheme starts is pretty slim I'd imagine.

Anyone used one, seen one? Any good?

Can someone explain to me what the differences are between the Specialized Globe San Francisco 1 and 2 are please? The '1' seems to be decent with great brakes, what is the crankset and hubs like? I'd be using it to blast to work and back.

San Francisco 1

And can anyone find either in a 23" frame?

Cheers!

The 1 is a single speed the 2 is a three speed, if any Specialized dealer does not have that bike in stock , they should be able to special order a 23".

Cheers all, I've found it for £260 but not in a 23", only 17", 19" and 21".

What do you think the chances of evanscycles matching the price as they do a price promise but state the correct size must be in stock. Anyone tried it and succeeded?

23" is huge. I'd say a 21" would be more suitable for you. I'm 6' and I ride a 20" frame (though an 18" would probably also fit me well). That said, it does depend somewhat on the frame manufacturer.

I've just purchased my first decent bike. Got a nice Specialised Hardrock fairly cheap so am looking forward to taking that out for the first time. Nothing compared to some of the bikes on here but I'm happy! Just plotted myself a 40 mile ride for sunday:eek::D!!

I have a quick question though. Could anyone point me in the direction of a decent guide on how to keep my bike maintained, and how to clean it etc.

Thanks.

Congrats mpledge! A 40 mile ride is rather ambitious for your first outing! I hope you're fit :p Check out the Park Tools website for lots of maintenance info, bikeradar also has some good tutorials, there's one on bike cleaning.

It's not really a guide, but the Park Tool website is an outstanding resource for bike maintenance.

The only routine maintenance you need to do really is just cleaning the chainset off after your rides and lubing it every now and then. You may need to adjust the tension in the gear cables after about 60-100km (once they've slackened off).

Good luck with your ride – 40 miles is a long way :p Cross country?

Right folks, I'm off to Evans tomorrow to grab a new perch. Undecided between a Specialized Toupe Gel and a Fizik Arione.

I know saddles are a subjective/personal thingy but what do you reckon?.

The gear cables really should be stretched during assembly and not require too much adjustment due to slacking off.

Cleaning the cassette chain and chainrings is a good idea, but get a chain cleaner or chain with a split link to make it easier.

used to have a Specialized BG Alias 143 on my TCR. Very nice saddle. The Selle italia it replaced was like riding on the "proverbial razor blade"
Nice thing about the Specialized saddles it that they do come in different widths.

Thanks for the links guys.

I agree it is quite ambitious, but I did 20+ miles the other week on my brother's bike which was fine. I'm in no rush and I'm going to stop and watch a game of rugby half way through so it should all be grand. I'll just take my time and enjoy it:).

The route itself will be about 50/50 road/trails, no hardcore off-road but some nice big hills! It's a shame there's so much road involved but until I get a bike rack I have to use the roads to get anywhere!
