I must have a weird backside because I love my Selle Italia and my Arione. TBH I've never had a saddle that I've actually needed to change. Maybe my bum is, erm, compliant.

SDG Bel Air RL (Cro-Mo or Ti versions) it has a fair amount of padding compared to the others mentioned and for me it's ride all day saddle :)
 
So I've decided to replace my bottom bracket and cranks on my Carrera Fury. Some of you may remember the problems I was having with crank bolts:

I think that when I first bought the bike the torque on the crank bolt was incorrect, so the cranks always wobbled slightly and the splines wore down. So now the crank never quite stays still on the BB.

I've removed the current cranks and BB (Truvativ Power Spline) and need to decide on a new set to buy. Can anyone advise? The BB I've just removed is a 68 x 118mm size.

Padded undershorts, with something baggy over the top?
 
The BB and cranks are a different type to your current. They'll fit fine but you'll require different tools to fit the BB.

Length of the crank arms, from the centre of the spindle to the centre of the pedal insert.
 
You would be as well replacing the lot. Not much price difference.

You can't go wrong with a Deore chainset: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=40496

Steel chainrings will last an age. The BB has two cups that srew into your BB shell at each end. You use the supplied spacers for the correct chain line.

You will also need a BB tool to install it (eg Park Tools BBT9)
 
Im a bit of a sport and exercise nut and plan to use the bike daily (minimum.) I will be using it to commute to work which obviously involves riding on roads. I think my automatic preference is for a mountain bike and do some trails, but I am in Northern Ireland and dont imagine we are the best for trails, as well as having no car to actually take my bike anywhere at the moment.

The main purpose is recovery from surgery and to help slowly build mobility/flexibility/strength into my legs again after a hip issue has screwed them.

I was previously told to avoid hybrid bikes? So am I best to go for a road bike since i know for sure I will be using it on roads? Must admit the prospect of getting wiped out by our terrible drivers is not exciting.

Any recommended bikes around the £500 mark?

although the budget is a little higher than yours the advise still stands... a road bike is fantastic for the road, a cross or audix bike great for winter riding and a little bit of off roading and a mtb is rubbish for the roads (but surprisingly great for off road)

the Ribble Audix or Focus Mares aren't a bad bet (although the cross bike is a little more than you wanted to spend.

At that price it might be worth looking second hand, or look into the cycle scheames and try and get your work to enrol if they don't
 
I think I'll go with the Deore chainset, I can't really stretch to the SLX, as much as I'd love to.

Just one final check: this should all work fine with my existing chain and SRAM front derailleur right?

Picked up Scott Scale20.

Awesome. It is so light, even the rimz are carbon. Glad I went for the 20 so I got Fox Forks. They feel nice and the remote lockout is handy.

Pics soon. If I can, finding it hard to move after cycling all day yesterday (in insane rain).
 
2 questions for you lot.

1. I've started cycling to work recently. It's 3 miles each way. I'm finding while cycling that its my knees that hurt the most. Its not the front or back but the inside of both knees. I've found this via googling

A seat that is too high will cause pain in the back of the knee.
A seat that is too low or too far forward may cause pain in the front of the knee.
Improper foot position on the pedal (or improper cleat alignment) can cause pain on the inside or outside of your knees.

As far as I'm aware my feet position is okay, I'm riding on the balls of my feet.

It could be I've just got lazy and fat over the years and its only been three weeks and maybe it will go. I just expected muscle pains in the thighs and calves etc but not in the knees.

2. I'm having trouble changing gears on the main chain ring. I'll go up to 3rd and when I need to come back to 2nd it just sits there making noises and after the hill has taken all my speed it finally changes. I think its the same with 1st. It goes down fine but it quite often won't come back up again. Any help?
