On the subject of brakes...

Can someone help me understand the difference between sintered, organic and kevlar pads and why you would choose one over the other?

Organic - Good bite from cold, good performance in the dry, dont last as well in the wet.

Sintered - Harder wearing, better when warmed up an all rounder wet or dry.

Kevlar - similar to organic but harder wearing, apparently the best of both from organic and sintered.

To add to this:
(some of these examples might not be applicable as were not actually IN the Alps most of the time :p)

Negatives of Sintered: Very loud when wet, can get a bit hard when riding out in the alps and your pads near enough catch fire.

Kevlar: This is supposed to be best of both, but my experience was that they were the worst of both. Mine were horrendously loud when wet and little more than half a day each in the alps and they were done!

Listen to my brakes in this vid
... they were the quietest there they were all holiday and I was also not actually going fast (causing more vibration)

Whilst were talking about brakes, my alligator ti ni rotor for my rear turned up today lovely bit of kit.
It's 180 for the rear but upon fitting I noticed that it was catching the caliper, I'm using superstar adaptors, could be it's a 160 instead of 180 even tho it's marked as 180.
However my main ? Is will an avid 185 rear adaptor work ok with a 180 disc ? Or is the 5 mm difference going to affect it too much?
Should say the brakes are avid elixir r's

Hello all,

looking a quick bit of help with regard to an issue with my bike. I basically came off my bike when it was icy a good while back and since have not been using it really since it seems a bit bust. Essentially i fell on the chain side and now the bit of the chain at the back wheel seems to be bent in a little, to the point it sometimes clips the spokes of the back wheel. I have tried forcing it away but it seems to always curl back after some time, I am also scared to pull it too hard and end up wrecking it completely.

Any ideas how to fix this? Tempted to take it to the local bike shop but frankly I am already abusing my bank account something silly right now

Your rotor size needs to match the adapter size otherwise you the pads won't reach enough rotor or the rotor will foul the caliper.

Take it to the bike shop before the derailleur gets sucked into the rear wheel and it all detonates.

Do you find your gears don't work right now?
You probably bent the mech hanger, although it's possible that the derailleur is bent too if you have been messing around with it.

A bike shop would be the easiest solution, as you need to get a matching mech hanger, and then almost definitely a gear alignment.

What bike do you have?

Haters gonna hate, but this is budgeteffingtastic

£1,695.95 for the frame and Cane Creek double barrel, £1,495.95 with Vivid.
That's a very good price for a World Cup bike frame.

You're right that's pretty good!
It looks a bit like a 'no-expenses-spared' bike, which is what I was referring to :)

Good tyre choice too, I had one of them up front and it felt so much better than my old Minions in pretty much all conditions.

Oh ok about the Codes, my mate just got some saints and he swears by them on his spicy 316. But he is much fatter/bigger than me so maybe he needs more stopping power.
Saw review saying the Code are as good as Saints.

Problem is the Haynes stroker rydes have given up the ghost and been moved onto my hardtail Merlin Malt 4. And its SLX brakes have moved onto my Giant Reign as its getting used more.

I might just get more more SLX's as they've always been good.

Not sure about hope brakes they look lush. But would only look good wiith a new bar, stem, headset, seatpost basically other coloured fruitiness.

With Mat black kit kits they'd look Meh !

So back to my original question are most calipers swappable front to rear ?

Also need a OCUK Spec me some decent brakes for up to £120
