Na, about 10 miles from that last place (by road). Its just a bit of woodland that's just under 2 miles from my front door. I didn't know it existed. I basically looked at some OS maps which show tracks and trails and rights of way and concentrated on areas of woodland of which there is plenty around me. I then just get on the bike and go have a look and I struck gold this time :)

Its by no means on the same scale as proper trail centres but it has obstacles and the like that are currently over my skill level so I can use it to learn whenever I feel the urge without spending ages getting to somewhere in a car.

I shall be having a look at other woodland areas around me as time goes to see what's out there. I recommend doing the same as you may have thing hidden away that you never knew about right on your doorstep.

That helmet looks very interesting! Would you be able to take a picture next to the Parachute please? Much better than the standard shapes of helmets. I think I'll have to order me one of them when I get paid.

Thanks for the suggestion!

did 15 miles today with the mrs.....still not sure if spd;s are for me. i have to constantly remind myself that i am clipped into the bike!

Keep pushing, I just went in and thought I've spent all this money on them, and for the XC I do I wouldnt go back, can unclip easily enough, and get lot more power through the pedals, and more feel and ability to mobilise the back end with my feet.

I don't think I could do SPD's. I'd end up in a spectacular swan dive type situation ending with me in a crumpled heap still clipped in TBH :o :(

The new Monkey Trail at Cannock Chase is epic. It damn near killed me but the bits I was conscious for were awesome. It's nearly all teccy singletrack and the builders have done a great job, never drags or gets boring.

I'm nowhere near fit enough to get the most out of it though, I had to stop and sit down at various points along the way but I made it to the end eventually.

Certainly need some new tyres though, my IRC Mythos XC's were all over the place, washing out underneath me in pretty much every corner and every off-camber section - not good!

Had our first good weekend of weather for riding here this year so went over to Ballater. Highest point we reached was 520 meters. Still a bit of snow further up but hope to get further out into the Cairngorms soon. :)

Summer is here...almost. :D

Hello guys. I need some new pedals for my hardtail. It is quite a lightweight beast but I don't like SPDs.

I feel I will fall off and die painfully.

Seems a lot of people like the DMR V12, there is a magnesium version also. Should I get these or can anyone recommend something lighter/cheaper/better etc.

Thanks.

Check out the superstar nano pedals, I have Wellgo MG-1s (DMR V12 copies) and the superstar pedals are grippier, lower profile.

Or you could spend a bomb and get the new DMR Vaults - very expensive but super grippy.

Nice pics, weescott.

Few mates all have the Wellgo DMR copies and rate them highly. Also, Edinburgh Bike Co-op do their own Revolution pedals which again, are almost identical to the DMR's but much less expensive. A mate has them on his Revolution Triad and says they are better than the Wellgos he had previously.

I've been riding my Cube Acid with Shimano M520 SPD's since I got it last year and have had no issues at all, despite concerns about getting out of them quickly if needed, on the trail. Had one dodgy moment on Mini Air's rock at Laggan Wolftrax where I couldn't get out of the right pedal quickly enough, went down with my shoe still attached and smacked my leg and knee under the bike but it didn't really put me off. I like the secure feeling when clipped in so think I'll stick with them for now, although I'm tempted to try a pair of cheap Wellgos just to compare. :)

Got the Wellgo 's and there very grippy and pretty decent quality for about half the price or less than the DMR V12's

Cannock is much improved with the new sections.
I have an XC race there in 2 weeks, can't wait.
Is it using the standard trail or are they marking a race route?

I can only dream of being fit enough to lap the whole thing without stopping (14yrs of smoking has not helped me - although I've stopped for 2 months now).

Pretty sure we saw Ollie Beckinsale on his Team Giant Anthem with full sponsor kit on tearing around today.

those superstar pedals look sex... might have to get myself a pair and go 50/50 spds and flats to suit my riding.

are their any other good brands that have a massive colour selection?

Had a fantastic(ly crap) saturday bleeding my brakes, it started off so well, followed the video I'd watched on youtube but unfortunately I managed to forget to put in the pad spacer and when it got to the section of the video where the SRAM dude is telling you to pump the lever, it popped one of the pistons out of the caliper and spunked dot 5.1 all over my patio ... doh.

It will be a race marked up route.
