How many bikes have you chaps gone through since being 'serious' about the hobby?

Any excuse to post the list:

kinesis maxlight
On one 456
On one 456 summer season <- got a little more serious here
Specialized Enduro 2006
Cove Stiffee <- got in to racing here
Specialized Epic Evo

Hi noob alert,

What's the lightest and best performing hardtail I can buy for <£500 ? Has to have hydraulic brakes. Will be used 100% for off road including very bumpy and jumps. I don't care what it looks like or what make or what colour. I want to be able to upgrade parts easily incase I get the bug. I am a noob coming back into MTBing having not ridden for about 10 years. I'm 6ft2, skinny/lanky and weigh 11.5 stone. Having gone out on a ride the other day, I really fancy minimising bumps and getting a full suspension, BUT, I'm told these are not so good for the type of riding I want to do as are less responsive and worse at climbing than hard tails, plus they weigh more and cost more. Is that fair to say?

Any advice much appreciated. :)

German efficiency!

Ordered my tyres just before 9am, processed and picked now waiting for collection from the courier by 10:30am!

It’s Friday, so we’re in need of some awesomesauce shots

Yeah for that budget hardtail is the only way to go, you need to be spending triple that for a full suspension bike.

Something like this is a good place to start, but get to the shops and try them. Also dont get hung up on hydraulic brakes, mech disk are going to be just as good at this price, when you think a decent set of hydraulic brakes costs at least £200.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've generally been given the impression from mates that Hydraulic are the way to go. I don't think I could go back to cable anything after using a set the other day. I don't like the play in cable brakes. Hardtail it is then.

Kona Nunu coming up at £509 on evans too.

MBR gave the Hardrock Pro and the Nunu 9/10 in this months magazine, worth picking up or reading in the supermarket.

Thanks again.

So what sort of differences start appearing in hardtails as the price goes up then? Can someone summarize the basic additions that start occuring on off the shelf hardtails as the price goes up. i.e.

£100 - Cheap, maybe not even front suspension?
£200 - Disc brakes mechanical included?
£300 - better all round frame etc?
£400 ?
£500 ?

Well it turns out that my insurance company will not pay the full value on the bike as it wasn't specifically listed on my policy. They'll only cover £500.. Which is what I paid for it so not too bad, although I did lose a brand new set of M4s and SDG saddle in the process!

So I'm in the market for a new bike, thinking of spending around £1000.. Any recommendations? I did like my Rockhopper so I'm tempted to get another one of those unless anyone has any better suggestions?

Rockhopper Comp. for around £900, either that or a decent Boardman/Cube.

I'm still not "serious" about it and most of my previous bikes have been dirge. (Carrera Kraken, KHS Montana Pro etc), have a Cube Ltd Race at the moment but I've got an Orange Crush frame and new XT chainset sitting in the garage, the rest of the bits are being donated from my Cube.

are you sure they won't? I would defo check the fine print on the insurance.

Anyway - on-one 456 SS? just over the £1k mark.

Yeh unfortunately she showed me in the booklet, the maximum you can claim is £500 unless it is specified. I'm getting back what I paid for it so I shouldn't complain, I'm just being greedy!

Another thing I have been meaning to ask on here, how did you guys learn to bunnyhop? I get annoyed even talking about it as I have never been able to do it. I'm getting older now so I'm worried I will NEVER learn it! I have owned skateboards and never been able to Ollie either. I just...CAN...NOT...bunnyhop. It really annoys me! I realised on my first ride out the other day in like a decade, that this is such a basic necessity to enjoy MTB riding. Any tips?
When I try, I just end up jumping off the pedals :( and looking like a complete moron. I get you need to lift front wheel first, but I just cannot turn it into a rear wheel lift and flowing movement. Doh!!!!
