Got my new bike through a cycle to work scheme about 2 weeks ago, loving it so far. It's a Specialized Hardrock Pro from Bike Scene in Guisborough. It's nice to get back into bikes after more than a few years out of the game, there's a whole host of new terminology to learn and things have moved on a bit lol!!

Anyway, firstly some pics of my old steed, a 1995 Kona Fire Mountain, she has served me well over ther years;

And here is the new one, still doesn't feel 'normal', will take a bit longer I guess but handles loads better offroad, the shorter stem makes the steering much more precise and the shocks help too!

Love that fire mountain. Seems to be very well looked after as well.
I had slightly newer fire mountain (think it was a 99 or 2000). Really loved it but didnt look after it very well - tbf, i was only 13. Forks eventually seised up and the back wheel got a bit buckled so i stripped it down and kept the frame with plans to get new parts and build it up again but mum chucked it out when i wasnt looking :( Im still in denial and live in hope of finding it buried up the back of the shed one day.

Cheers :)

It has a few chips on the paint here & there as would be expected from a 15 year old bike but it's generally OK. It could do with a new BB, but is basically fine! I changed the handlebars after I bent the originals in about 1997 and took the opportunity to swap the gripshift it came with for rapidfire shifters and the cantilever brakes for V-Brakes but apart from that, nothing has been changed on it!

Hope some one can help. Are the spokes in a Mavic 717 36h the same lenght as the Mavic XM719 Disc Rim 36h?

The bike shop just quoted me £30 for spokes if there different.

You sure you can re-use the current spokes? They sometimes have to cut them out, if the hub is the same then the length shouldn't change; but there only charging 83p a spoke which is pretty good.

As far as I understand it's a steel outer section which is riveted to a aluminium inner (spider), which bolts to the hub. The rivets allow float and movement between the two, which stops the rotor from warping under extreme heat due to different epansion rates of the metals. The design also saves weight, but the average rider wont really notice any benefits.

Did you get that from here?

I'v never bought a full set of spokes from my lbs, but broken a single spoke a few times and asked them to change it for me. They fixed it for £9 each time. Spoke is listed as 9p in the parts list and the labour for replacing and retruing makes up the rest.

Think im going to buya Carrera Fury or Rockrider 8.1 this month. Was tempted by the Diamondback Axis for £780 but cant really justify spending that level of cash when either of the previous two will be fine for my needs.

Just generic spokes, but i still think that £30 is too much for a set of spokes.
You can get a set of DTswiss comp DB for half that price on CRC

Aye, but its the price you pay unless you build them yourself. He could always buy them off CRC and get them to build it but they will get the costs back somewhere else I am sure!

Another Reality|Bites random post.

/facepalm
It's not random.
He is obviously poking fun at Bri by comparing his "changed x, y and z comment - but it's still original" comment to trigger saying that his broom has had 17 new heads and 12 new handles.

What's the general consensus on Genesis bikes? I'm waiting for my Cycle 2 Work voucher to come through, and have been looking at the Core 20 and Core 30 as possibilities.
