Thinking about heading out somewhere in next couple of weeks since I'm bored of just riding the same old stuff, what downhill places would people recommend in Yorkshire?

I ride Wharncliffe pretty much every week and it's quite dull now, thinking about Carlton Bank??

I was expecting 16000ft :p

I appologise, but dont worry - i'll make it up to you with lots of big* hills :D.
Im thinking of doing a few Munros on my mtb. Apparently there are several which can be cycled.

*Knowing where you are, you probably dont consider these 'big' hills.

It's never going to work that well. While you could set the limiters on the mech to work with an 8 speed cassette, the spacing is different and 8 speed chains are thicker than 9 speed chains.

Perhaps you need new gear cable or a new chain?

I somewhat suspected as much, may just bite the bullet and get a 9 speed cassette, new chain AND rear dérailleur (oh and new shifters). That only comes to...oh dear... Still, will end up doing it eventually I guess...

Hiya guys, should thought i would ask a quick question. I have just entered the world of disc's on my hardtail and was wondering what people do to 'organise' the front disc cable, at the moment i am using a zip tie :o)

Either way loving the new breaking power !

Don't need anything if the cables are cut to size, but I currently use a zip tie... because I'm a pleb who shouldn't be cutting my own cables.

Same here, i did not fit my discs, not because i think i would mess it up, just that i have never fitted them before and the shop offered free fitting. Will admit the cable is not that long, just it would flap about i think if no cable tie. Been looking and hope do cable guides to go where my cantis were mounted. might look at them ;)

As long as he keeps the same shifter I can't see the problem? The shifter dictates how much the mech is moving which will still be in line with the cassette. 9 speed is slightly narrower but I'd imagine it would work fine.

Fair enough Jonny :). I managed to total a front mech years ago from using a mix of 8 and 9 speed parts. That was after my LBS said it would work fine.

hey guys. need some advice. no idea where to start. I am after a full susser. Recently bought a hardtail but have come into an unexpected bit of cash and dont think a hard tail is the right bike for me. Anyway, i am after the best value for money in terms of componenets and it has to be a looker aswell!

Anyway, my budget is around £1500-1600

I'd really appreciate any input. I have no idea where to start. This is my first full sus

Cheers;)

im also looking at my first full susser but still keeping the hardtail for training and light xc runs
for that budget im looking at the Giant Trance X3 which has some pretty choice components in the fox forks and 5" travel so could take a mix of most things, brakes arent the best but a good starting point :)

Where are you going to be riding hk3948? i.e. Will an 'All mountain' or XC full sus meet your needs?

to be fair mate, thats one of the reasons why im not quite sure where to start. I mean, whats the difference between long and short travel in terms of use. I dont do downhill or anything like. I ride single track like cwmcarn and avan in wales, and have just found them a little too rough on the hard tail i got recently

i mean, these 2 bikes clearly look very different, but they are both full suspension, so what is the intended use for each?

http://www.tredz.co.uk/.Giant-Trance-X-3-Mountain-Bike-2010-Full-Suspension-MTB_28449.htm

i mean, im assuming one is short travel and the other is long travel? is that right?

But what kind of riding is each particularly good at?

I hear those Trances are ace, and that only really awesome people ride them.

The cube is a 100mm XC bike, whereas the Trance is 120mm Trail bike.

A few to get you started

Mondraker Foxy, Mondraker Factor, Sunn Wisdom S1

Sounds like you need a bike with 100-120mm of travel. Anything more gets heavy and sloppy when pedaling up hill.

If I were you i'd try and get a test ride on some bikes, although riding around a car park probably isn't the best type of test.
