Had a good ride around Dalby today with IC, some of the new world cup black routes are great especially the steeper drop sections, I can't imagine ever being able to cycle up some of the new black ascents though, a lycra clad XC monkey came zooming past us at one point much to our disgust :p

He was in need of a pair of balls and a mans bike :D

As mentioned in an earlier post, the chainrings on my 2009 Rockhopper comp are in need of replacement parts. It seems to be almost as cheap to just buy a new crankset as it does to replace the chainrings themselves, and I fancy doing a little upgrade work! I'm pretty sure I will need to change the bottom bracket as currently the bike is fitted with an Octalink BB. Are the SLX/XT/Deore BBs all cross compatible, or will I have to match a Deore BB to the Deore crankset and a SLX/XT BB to the SLX crankset?

I must admit I do quite fancy the new 10 speed gear sets, running in a 2x10 configuration. However, this is likely to require a pretty hefty overhaul of components. A better wheelset and forks wouldn't go amiss either. Does the Rockhopper frame warrant the upgrades, or would I be better off putting the money towards a better frame?

That time of month, are you cramping and feeling bloated?
I was being playful... but thanks for telling me your life story.

No not cramped nor bloaty nor that time of month nor telling you my life story smarty pants ;)

Anyway, I put P&A's in for both the SX Trail II and Faith in medium, will see if there is any stock with suppliers.

Just spend the cash on a new SLX or XT crankset, it will come with a BB.

The M4 frame is pretty decent.
Before you change the frame though get some light wheels as they will make the biggest difference.

Quite amazing that changing the pedals actually changes the feel of the bike. Gone from Wellgo v8 copys to proper DMR V8's and the difference is quite big, actually feel like my feet stick to the DMRs rather than slip on the Wellgo's, plus i can easily grease the DMR's for once :).....Also still got an annoying creak and crack sound on the front end, despite my headset been re-installed today, so me and the lbs are totally stumped where thats coming from.

quite looking forward to replacing my wellgo copys with superstar nano tech flats :)
was getting quite a bit of pedal bounce now that im getting a bit faster so hopefully the nano techs grip me a bit better ;)

Thanks guys.

I guess rather than 'better frame' I should have said a new bike as a whole. I do like the look of the Whyte 905, but obviously this is a different style of bike at a very different price point. Would the money be better spent upgrading the Rockhopper, or towards buying a better bike 'package' like the 905?

can i have a bit of advice please peeps!

Is this all i need to convert my GT Chucker to SS?

Hi Andy,

Running singlespeed on a bike designed for gears can be a bit tricky without a chain tensioner, half links don't always work either.

Google image chain tensioner or look at Chain Reaction or such and you can find plenty of chain tensioners designed to replace a rear mech, these usually work well enough and are easy to fit.

You can usually get plastic cassette spacers from old freehub clusters (ask an LBS?) and use an old cog from a freehub cluster to get you started, a cheap way to find out what gearing you prefer IE 16/34 or such.

Unless you have done already, i'd get your order in with Superstar. When i ordered the other day, they told me that they were expecting delivery of 400 black flats, 300 were already pre-ordered and they will be putting the price back up a day or two after they come in. I can't wait to try them out!!

yeah ordered a few days ago, hopefully getting them just after the 17th :)

Nice! If you dont mind me asking, how much did that set you back?

I'll be in the market for a full susser shortly :)

Was £1800 mate. I was deciding between this and a lapierre zesty 314. Had a go on both for about an hour (admittedly in a car park) but just felt way more comfortable in the cube, although i would still definitely recommend the Lapierre as an option. Guess it all depends on your budget

My lbs is trying to get hold of a giant anthem x4 for me.
Called them yesterday but they are out of stock. He's going to his giant rep to see what they have.
Hopefully he can get one otherwise it's an online buy.
They stock Cube bikes mainly so may have to give one of them a blast depending on what comes through :)

So got my Deemax wheels yesterday and I'm well pleased to say the least.
I have been uhming and aahing about what tyres to get as I'd like to try something different that just Maxxis.

My tyre of choice was going to be the new MIchelins, but apparently they are still months away.

I then looked at some new Schwalbe, given this thread
http://www.ridemonkey.com/forums/showthread.php?t=227692

I then stumbled upon on this review and it seems well worth the "gamble"
http://www.pinkbike.com/news/specialized-clutch-sx-review-2010.html
Specialized Clutch SX (1.5 ply). Apparently sticks to the ground like poop to a woolen blanket, is very durable, super light and best of all CHEAP @ 22 ish per tyre.

That's a whopping 234grams saved per wheel, over the super tacky minions.
Just over a POUND saved on WHEELS alone, the most important place to save weight!
Furthermore, I'll be running it tubeless with some Stans so even less rotational weight.

As soon as I'm back on the big bike I will post review.

It's a beautiful bike dude :)

I've set my max budget at 1400 - 1500.
As per my last post the Anthem X4 suits my budget nicely but I'll just wait and see if my local guy can get one for me
