Guys,

Ive got a Specialized Rockhopper (2008) which i have started riding to work. The tyres are rather chunky and i seem to be fighting them on the road.

Is there a hybrid alternative that combines good road use but also able to go off road when needed? I don't particularly go off road that often but it would be nice not to have to change tyres frequently.

Budget is around £15-£20 per tyre.

Cheers :)

i would say continental speed or race kings they are fast rolling and can go offroad perfect for what you need.
others may have opinions on this, i've used both and they are ok ,if you can afford the supersonic versions they are worth the extra money which again i've used both .

The Blur is now tubeless. :D

Seems like the best place to post..

Looking for a mountain bike £200-£250. Most likely going to local bike shop to look for some, but was hoping for a bit on an idea on certain makes/models to choose from. The main use will be longish (2-3 days) bike rides this summer.

Thanks

What type of riding will you be doing? Are we talking cycle paths, trail centres, road or...?

Hard to know what to recommend if you are going to your local bike shop, they may only stock certain brands, for example, one I know only stocks Giant.

You are better off looking round the usual online bike shops at bike in your budget then you can come here, show us what you've seen and we can tell you whats best for the type of riding you want to do in your price range.

What is for sure, if you're set on a mountain bike, it IS going to be a hardtail, and it WILL be an entry level bike in your price range. Nothing wrong with that at all to get you started though :)

Try googling the following bike shops for Hardtail Mountain bikes.

Chain Reaction
Evans
Halfords
Leisure Lakes
Wiggle

I was just watching "SuperScrimpers" on channel 4 and this fat woman visited a family in Southampton who were reputedly world class scrimpers. He walked her to his garage and wheeled out a Stumpjumper FSR with what looked conspicuosly like an S-Works carbon frame (£2.5k frame + probably another grand on components) and his idea of saving money? Cutting up a nice big length of guttering and strapping it on his down tube to use as a crud catcher.

As above, look at Decathlon for the Rockrider, but definitely best to see them in the flesh if you have one nearby.

Nothing wrong with bikes from Halfords. Well the Voodoo's, Carerra's and Boardman's are all fine. The problem with Halfords is that 'some' shops have poorly qualified bike mechanics, however, some of them though are very good, especially those stores that stock the Boardman bikes.
