I bought the Specialised BG Gel full finger gloves, they weren't that cheap at £30 and at first the palms wore quite quickly but that has stopped now. I've fallen off a few times and they have protected my digits though, and havn't ripped or torn.

I wouldn't recommend them, but wouldn't advise against them either, I just went to a bike shop and tried a few pairs on and bought what felt the best. The sizes seem quite small, ended up needing XXL. But you know what they say.... big hands..... big gloves!

I'm with you on this, they aren't the best but certainly aren't the worst.

Hi Folks,

Unfortunately my plans for buying a new bike have hit some financial stumbling blocks, so a small upgrade is on the cards instead.

At the minute i have a Carrera Vulcan disc spec 2010, its fine for what i do, however being a fairly heavy chap i am finding more and more that the brakes are really letting my riding down...they are tektro IO cable disc brakes.

So i was thinking about upgrading the brakes to some cheap hydraulics, i have seen some on CRC and the likes but need some real advice regarding selecting a set.

I need front and rears, not more than £140.00.....any ideas?

Slightly over budget at £154:

I have these on the CX bike. Nothing fancy but have a good lever feel.

Avoid the Deore M486 & M575. They feel awful.

Avid Juicy 3's are...ok...for the money, but still feel pretty horrid.

Second hand you might find some Hope Mono Mini's or Mono M4's on budget. They would be much better than any of the above.

Cheers for the reply, i shall have a think about those Magura's in the link...have heard some good things about magura.

I know you havent mentioned these but what are peoples thoughts on the Formula Oro K18's ? http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=53568

Would rather stay away from 2nd hand to be honest, i know it can represent better value for money but i like new stuff because i know that it hasnt been abused before.

Those brakes are good, but a bit disproportionate to the bike.
Why not save the cash to get something better later on in the year?

Alternatively, I have a pair of juicy 3 laying around somewhere that I could give you.
I have no clue as to their condition, but if youd cover postage I'd be happy to send them. They'll need a bleed and new pads.

Wow...thats very generous of you :D

I will happily cover postage and some extra if required.

Even if they arent in usable condition i can learn how to work on them etc etc.

I will drop you a message through trust if you have that activated re: payments etc.

Magura Julie's have been around for donkey's ages - they should knock spots off Tektro IO's.

(I have the same bike for commuting, had to replace a rear calliper of the Tektro because it was faulty, and Halfrauds were too incompetent to do so)

Might it be worth considering getting a single Julie brake for the front, and just replacing the rear pads in the Tektro? Keeps the cost a bit lower perhaps.

CRC package arrived, HOLY COW those are some super light bars!!!

Will be tomorrow before I can fit them but so damn light!!! very poor packaging mind you

sorry to ask again, but is are there any good bikes around my price point £160 this is what i posted last night:
The guy is asking £150 and I pick up. Pictures seem good condition, it's black and the picture below is of the actual bike, I mainly do short rides 5miles or so but i am going away to the Isle of White is august so will be used allot off road there. One more thing, I have killed my current bike: bent derailleur, fell off, dents in frame etc.. And tbh its pretty much gone

hello, can anyone help me out here. tomorrow i want to order the following goodies:

A saddle (charge spoon?)
Pedals (under £50)
stem for camber elite (need it shorter then standard as riding position is nuked)

any ideas? i appreciate the stem issue might be hard to answer but i havent got sizes to hand.

Got a picture of your bike?

Re: pedals, what are you after, flats or more technical?

I can't comment on that particular bike, but when I was looking for a 'good' bike for myself, I found that brand new, you had to stretch to around a monkey. £150 isn't going to buy you anything fantastic unless you're very fortunate second-hand. That isn't to say the bike in question won't suit what you're asking. I'm sure someone will be along shortly to help you a little more.

Just a random question:

On hard trails, are hardtails generally less favoured due to the stronger likelihood of rear pinch-flats or is it pretty moot?

Anyone have any experience with these?

Not got any of those tyres but they sound like the type of thing you're looking for, and review well - try 1, or 2 :)

As for hardtails on rough stuff, I think people are generally finding that full sussers are more capable, track the ground better and soak up bumps better than hardtails. Punctures doesnt factor in much from what I've found.
(Bear in mind that my idea of a hard trail is Innerliethen Black!)

So a full sus is generally about a smoother ride whereas a hardtail is about 'feeling' it a little more?

I'm pretty pleased with my 'entry' bike at the moment, but I'm already having my mind wander to a time when I can build a trail-machine from scratch and also buy a tourer/road-bike. I think for the trail MTB, I'll drop an inch or two on the frame size considering I'll be really throwing it around (with any luck).

Christ, I'm hooked. I always knew I would be. Nice to have a hobby again. :D

Incidently, I've been looking at some websites of 'around the world' riding recently. Definitely getting an itch!

Hardtail is more rough and ready, where as a full sus will give you a more bump free ride per say, both types are more than capable in the right hands, also ive never had any pinch flats on my rear at all in the years ive ridden HT's.
