... if it is - I'm just going to be **** on again for saying it's a BSO (bike shaped object), but it is.
BSOs have their place in the market I guess and are good for pootling about your local woods and so forth, but it's not really a decent bike.

*poos on you*

ishamy, check out Jason McRoy - see what he was riding back in the day, before his untimely demise.

Granted, you wont be able to take your Raleigh down your local downhill course these days, but it should be more than fine for most light trails and building up your skills, and getting fitter.

I'd say the hardtail argument is debatable - there arent many expecially good full sussers below £1000, but if you prefer riding a full sus and can live with the weight penalty then I'd go full sus every time.

As with a lot of things, its personal preference. If possible, see if a local bike shop will let you test ride a few things, see what you prefer. :)

That's correct - a +/- £300 full sus bike is unfortunately a bit of a waste, as the rear suspension will really only just add weight and no performance. As a rule of thumb sub £1000 you should get a great hardtail. The rule gets a bit blurred when you shop around for second hand bike at that same price as you will get HT or FS bargains in that price range.

Take "street" above as an example. He's going to pick up a Specialized Pitch pro today, which is a bike that can be had second hand for about that much. It's a lot of bike, and in the right hands a right weapon of destruction! I have seen them with 160mm forks going for that price.

It all really depends on what you decide is best for you (HT or FS) and then deciding on a budget accordingly, not the other way around (imo)

Yea where I live there isn't any real downhill trails. Theres a grounds area with paths (not specifically for bikes) and they are just making some bike trails through it just now.

And then secondly, my local 2 bike shops don't stock much at all, and if they do have anything it costs the earth, that's why I haven't mentioned how much I payed for mine lol

I know looks shouldn't have anything to play on what you go for but I do like the look of them. Shall see how it goes, will read into him sounds interesting. Thanks

Another thing, I see a lot of the bikes on here with raised up seats, I'm thinking I may have a bike way to big for me, basically the seat is as low as it goes (nearly as the reflector on the back is strapped to the post) and I'm just touching the ground. Is this not normal?

Here's a video on how to set your seat up correctly

Yea thats the one :( I take it by BSO you make something that not good at all lol, well you live and learn, I bought it before the time I used to research everything I bought nearly.

As far as I'm aware its OK for what I do/need it to do, and over the next while once I get into the riding more, I may sell and up-grade abit. I've already discovered that Hardtail is the way to go for less £1000 yea?

Still I'm a noob to this and will hopefully be fun getting in to it :D

By the sounds of it your bike is ample for your needs no need to upgrade or replace just go out and enjoy it.

What is the best way to hit a medium speed small drop off? Only come across slow ones which are simple enough just to roll up to now.

On my new found route(s) there is a stump thats about 12" tall perhaps a little more, due to the run-up to this you are going moderately quickly.

Just pull the front wheel up slightly and aim to land both wheels at approx the same time when going over it with weight about 70% back on the bike, not too far so you fall off the back, but far enough so you're not pitched forwards over the bars?

Quickly. As daunting as it is learning drops, hit them quick so that you dont just flop off the front, or pull up so much you land on your back wheel. When you run up spot your landing and just aim to land on both wheels at the same time, you'll soon get the feel for what's right on the drop, don't overthink it.

Thank you. With it being local it means I can ride it a lot and if I want to I can loop round and retry on the same day. :)
