I really want to get a good bike, only issue is last time I spent £500 at Halfords the bike basically broke under my weight 21 - 22 stone. I told them about my weight in store and they said the bike should be fine.

What bike was it? Carrera I'm guessing?

I'm hoping they didn't flog you an Apollo...

Can't remember if I'm honest mate but that sounds about right! Was about 3 years ago. I remember online I found a bike called the Fat Boy or something which was for fat guys like me but can't remember for the life of me the exact name. Guess I need to lose some more weight before I can start riding again :D

I did get a little extra compensation when I took it back due to the fact they said it would be fine under my weight as when riding along something snapped and I stacked it in the road luckily the car swerved or I could have been brown bread.

£500 would get you a decent entry level Hardtail. Something from Giant or Specialized (Hardrock at the lower end, Rockhopper at the upper end of your budget from Specialized)
My 1st decent bike was a Giant XTC which was excellent and came in at the £500 mark

Shop around, there are some excellent deals to be had online, but nothing beats seeing and testing one at your LBS. I would tend to avoid Halfords for the simple fact that 99% of them have no idea what they are talking about

Ok mate thank you very much for that. With my current weight would you say £500 is a large enough budget to get a bike which would support me?
Thanks

I are be most likely be subjected to peer pressure and ride all the big shiz! :D

Haha, well tbh, not necessarily "bigger" stuff - just tougher/more fun stuff than the main lines. I'll list a few for ya, then you can just ask around in the area and someone would point it out.

Yep, of course :)
Frame wise manufacturers tend to put the same frames on £500 bikes as they do on £1000 bikes (hardtails at least)

A friend of mind bought a bike to help him lose weight (Carrera Vulcan Disc from Halfords) and it's still going strong after a year. He weighs about 19 - 20 St
Usage wise he is out about once a fortnight on the lighter Blue and Red graded trails

The Specialized Hardrock has a structural limit of about 300lbs before you have problems according to Specialized

You are supposed to use all your travel. - run what feels comfortable.
If you bottom out too easily, add more. If you don't use your travel and it's uncomfortable - take some out - simples?

agreed - i have the same forks - the setting on the fork are nonsense. Sounds like you have them set just about right if your using all the travel. Maybe add a touch more.

I weight about 14 and a half stone and run about 85-95psi in both chambers and use just about all the travel. According to the chart on the forks I should have about 120-140psi but could bearly budge the forks and got almost ZERO sag!

:eek: I know. Whats going on!?

1. Rear wheel bearings need looking at - although did service the freehub the other night and it has improved.

2. Avid brakes have just been sorted. (temperamental to say the least)

3. SID RLT 2011 booked in for a service (cancelled the last one) they really need it now :(

4. Inner chainring worn - had to do that last ride in the big ring to avoid chainsuck (new chain)

5. just replaced the mech hanger 'AGAIN'

This is just the stuff that's come up in the last month or two.

/ crying due to time & expense.

I've been getting the super squeely front brake as well as a gobble from the rear caliper tonight.

Think one of my wheels needs a slight true, it looks like it is partially out when I am riding but this could be the tyre not being a perfect mould.

guys a quick question
i need to buy myself a bleed kit for my avid elixir's as i cant keep relying on my m8 to bleed them :p, which one would you buy the genuine avid kit or the epic kits as seen on the bay ?
also how easy would it be to replace the hoses?
was thinking superstar ones are getting some good reviews and need the extra length on the front as im trying out some zocchi 66's. coming from 130mm to 180mm means my current hose isnt long enough :(

The ones on the bay are meant to be just as good as Avids own kits, never replaced cables on them but it cant be that hard.
