I want to buy a bike soon to save money on travel. I am familiar with the bike brands but not with the specs.
I would be grateful if someone could spec me a bike that can be used for commuting and leisure.
I don't want a road bike or a hybrid, but looking more towards a hardtail.

I have found this bike

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/..._productId_762393_langId_-1_categoryId_165499

My price range is around the £160-180 mark. I need a 22 inch frame

I want to buy something of quality but value for money.

Any suggestions ?

If you can stretch the extra £70 then this would be well worth a look.

You definitely get what you pay for with bikes and you're looking at the very bottom of the pile with your budget. Don't forget that cheaper bikes will more than likely need more attention from mechanics in the longrun so more spent now is less overall.

You need to be looking second-hand to get a decent bike in that range.
(or you need to re-think your budget. £250 is around the minimum to get a decent bike new - see links above)

I wish. I don't mind buying second hand. The problem is validating if it is legit and not stolen. I am not looking to get stopped and searched for handling stolen goods.

where would i buy a second hand bike besides the obvious being gumtree or ebay.

I think i would have to rethink my budget for a decent brand bike.

I guess the £200 is the minimum for anything of quality.

What are people opinion on Viking brand ?

BikeRadar forums have a good classifieds section. Post any links in here if you're not sure about what your buying.

Thanks for your help.

I really want to make an informed decision about this purchase rather just acting on impulse because of price.

I welcome any more suggestions. I think I will just add more to the kitty and make a solid purchase.

I wonder if any one else has shared this experience;

I went out for a ride today 100 mile or so, all on easy old railway paths or canal tow paths, there were quite a lot of other people out too. Now I normally treat paths like roads and ride on the left and would assume everyone would do the same. Am I incorrect in thinking this is how things should be because nobody I passed today agreed, all resolutely staying to the right even in face of an impending collision.

That winds me up when ever I go out on the paths with my missus. People just seem to have no clue!

Was going along the path near my house with her the other night, with another guy maybe 10 metres or so infront. We were coming up on a man walking his two Alsatians that weren't on leads. Instead of controlling them, he let them run at the guy infront of us and force him off his bike! The man just said "they won't bite, I'm trying to get them used to being off the lead" and laughed about it. Idiot. The poor guy was quite restrained, I'd have probably ended up kicking his dogs!

At least when I'm off road I don't tend to get these problems and I find I get a lot less angry with people! :)

Hi bikers. Just been out for the first time in over year and would like to know how far it was. Is there anywhere online that i can use google maps/similar to plot the off road points and calculate a distance or is it time to break out the maps and a piece of string?

edit: found one http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/

Bit of a boring change but these finally arrived meaning I can actually go out and do some MTB'ing now:

Fit them this weekend and see how they go. Can't be any worse than the non-existent and VERY worn pads I have on the bike just now :o
