Supercow, your video is already better by having a dog that isn't annoying even if it is almost as ugly as you.

So my mate has got me into downhill, another expensive hobby to add to the list. Thinking about getting a bike, can only borrow them for so long. If i was looking to pick up a 2nd hand hard tail whats the cheapest i could get away with spending without getting junk?

Are dogs in the Dirt 100?

They bloody should be, mine is anyway!

Downhill & Hard tail - computer says no

You can go as fast in the majority of UK Downhill on a HT than an 8" monster.
All my friends are on a DH HT craze at the moment and none of them are going any slower. That said it's not for me and I don't like it all that much because you rattle too much :D It certainly teaches you how to ride ragged and loose.

Just going by what my mates use and I've given them a go, the following will do the job:

http://www.dialledbikes.com/products/mtb/alpine.php

http://www.on-one.co.uk/i/q/FROO456SS/on_one_summer_season_steel_hardtail_frame_2011

http://www.cotic.co.uk/product/BFe

All of the above frames can realistically take forks up to 160mm, which will slacken the H/A as the travel goes up. A good idea would be to get a travel adjustable lyric fork, so you can use it on the trails as well.

Have a look around for a built up second hand Ragely Blug Pig, Ragely Mmbop or On One 456. You might be lucky to find a Blue Pig for that price but the others shouldn't be too bad.

Jinya disagrees :D

There are frames out there that have similar geo to DH oriented bikes, yeah you might not be as fast as guys on fully squishy bikes but it's certainly doable.

I had my hardtail at Glentress/Innerleithen and didn't feel any slower than when riding my fs there, was a little beat up on the final (third) day though :p

This second hand Santacruz Chameleon would be a good start. I have seen a few of them being raced DH in Scotland. Not as fast as proper DH bikes from what I have seen. Depends where you ride.

Those trails are smoother than a baby's bum 90% of the time and nothing that would be classed as DH. :p

Hardtails are great for beginners at Downhill.
They help you learn a lot faster than FS (which absorbs your mistakes more).
I would like to ride mine more often but I get knee pains (that's pretty bad at the age of 20 isn't it?).

Can't comment on the different bikes, but around the £800 mark for a second hand bike should get you something good. I like that Chameleon Weescot posted but it needs a shorter stem and possibly better brakes IMO.
