Anyone recommend a good starter road bike? I don't really want to spend anything over £400 to begin with. I have a mountain bike at the moment but I really want to get out there on the road now, to build fitness as well as to just get out there and enjoy everything that cycling has to offer :)

OK, so I'm looking for a bike, it will be used to commute to work with but there are some good back roads around here, so wouldn't really want a pure road bike.
I always get carried away buying things and keep upping the allowance but I really wouldn't want to spend over 350-400.

Best bike to get? Talk to me Goose...

Anyone seen this yet?

Linked on STW the other day, the sensation of speed is immense! There's a few other videos on there too, definitely impressive stuff. Let's remember this vid next time we're all on the brakes entering a mildy rocky section :D

The Spank rims are shiat. Too wide and they dent like no one's business. Personally I would avoid them.

I think your thinking on the standard Spank Spike rims......The Spank Spike Race Evo28 rims are practically the same dimensions of the Flow rim. Dunno what they are like when it comes to denting though...

The look much cooler than Flows imo

EX823 rims are bombproof but heavy

Ah, maybe I am, though on the basis the normal spank rims dent like mad I'd steer clear of those too.

721 then?

is that fast forwarded lol?

You'd think so but it doesn't seem like it to me, normally you can tell. That vid has the same sort of speed sensation that's in the one of Lopes racing down A-Line in Whistler.

I found that under these circumstances, the footage on Youtube appears sped up

  • You have taken the footage on a GoPro at 60FPS (max 720P resolution of the Original GoPro HD hero)[/li]
  • Did not edit the video or change the frame rate, purely uploaded the raw file to Youtube.
    (Trimming the video is fine).[/li]

Watching the video it seems to fit the criteria (Unedited footage, 720p max res).
Bare in mind, when I tested it, it only appears faster under these circumstances, it does however not change the timing, "magically" making making your 2 minute race run, into a 1:38 minute race run ;)

I don;t pretend to understand the complete technical ins-and-outs, but it's because Youtube broadcasts in 30FPS (possbly less) so your video needs to be "retimed". Something in this process makes it appear faster.

Regardless, he's still hauling ass!

Looks like the short list is ZTR Flow, EX721 or EX823. I'm leaning towards the Flows then if I destroy them I'll pony up for some EX823s.

Ordered my brakes last night, a nice shiny pair of Formula The ONE w/203mm rotors front & rear. :)

Are you basing that on the other Spike rims or just Spank rims in general? The both Spike rims just a different alloy compound to the rest of the Spank range of rims which Spank claim is tougher.....

Reason I ask is I did fancy trying the Spank Spike Evo28 rims simply based on their looks and weight....but if they do dint easy as you so i'll look else where

TBH if you keep an eye on the tension of your spokes n what not I dont think you'll have any problems with the Flows.

Did you order the brakes from that French guy on ebay?

Yeah, ordered off ebay. Much cheaper than paying UK retail pricing.

Shame most of the stuff I want off crc is out of stock otherwise I reckon I'd have my bike ready next week. No rush though, good things come to those that wait.
