There are a lot of shortcuts you can make/ specialist tools you can manage without. Based on what I have built bikes with, this is what it should cost tools wise at a minimum:

Workstand £30
A good qaulity set of Allen keys: Should have them already
Torx keys.
BBT 9 tool: £17
Park Tool Sr11: £16
FR5C tool: £4
Chain splitter: Should have one already
Rubber Mallet £2
Adjustable spanner: £5
Saw & old stem or Pipe cutter: £5
Cable cutters: £15

Once you start you will realise how easy it is to build a bike. If there are any parts you are not sure about there will be a guide on Youtube.

Whatever you do. Don't build your bike on a Friday night after having a few shandy's with a ride planned for the next day. :o

If you want to do it a bit cheaper than that, dont bother with a workstand (it's very helpful if you have one tho). Also, the 'Park Tool Sr11' (chain whip) is not needed to install a cassette. As long as whatever hub/wheel you buy doesnt have an old cassette already on it, you can do without a chain whip as well.
 
I think a small torque wrench is a must as well. Some will argue that one is not needed, but for the sake of around £30 (if you shop around), it would save many bolts from coming loose or expensive stripped threads.

I'm biased though as part of my day job is to spend many hours working out what torque to do bolts up to in engines. It's sad to see people not following instruction after spending so many hours working out the torques....
 
i don't have a workstand, will see if halfords have one tomorrow as would make life a lot easier.
Don't have a torque wrench, i'll see if can see one cheap at the shops near me.
I don't have a headset press, will i need one? If so will make my own as it's not something i will use again.

Apart from that i think i have all the tools in this kit: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=40997 which i got a month or so back

I love mine, have had them since the end of January and done a fair few miles on them now.. They make my bike seem so much easier to ride up hill! :D
 
Has anyone ordered from edinburgh cycles? They have the Fox Flux helmet cheaper than anyone else, and also the 5.10 baron trainers cheaper, so am thinking about ordering from there.

You don't need one. But it is the proper way of installing a headset. The old block of wood and a hammer is crude but it works. Rubber mallet is easier though. I use it to gently knock loose stiff cranks, forks, installing the crown race, replacing bearings. Throwing at passing roadies...such a useful tool.

I haven't ordered from them but have ordered stuff through them as there is shop near my work.


They are one step above Halfords.

Had a fun day at Lee quarry with my hardtail, Ignitor on the back is so fast, amazed I didn't get a puncture though.

Spent a while on the tables and I can do a little camp whip now :D

Went for a shorter than planned ride today. Managed to somehow strip the threads of the crank arm tensioner.:confused: Just have to remember not to ride the Bullit that I stole the spare off. :p
