mistercrabb don't mess about just get out there. I'm going to be in the process of selling my DH bike now as i just won't use it in the UK and getting a tasty 6" bike. The alps are amazing though, some tracks are a bit rough and raw with braking bumps and damn there are some slow people out there (i'm not majorly fast but never got over taken) but the tracks with uplifts totally make up for it, Les Crossets Red run was probably the best track i rode all week it just flowed berm to berm all the way down. Already planning next year. Flew easyjet as well and had zero problems even with two over weight bikes!

Do excatly that - mooch some money off someone and bugger off, you wont regret it!

To be fair, most MTBers i know do a lot of training for no-pedalling races. In fact, some of them are so dedicated, that they refuse to pedal at all, prefering instead to get off and push up even the slightest of inclines.
The roadies had no chance up against such rigorous training schedules

Heh... do you mean they got off and walked/ran uphill with the bike to avoid knackering themselves out pedalling? if so I can't wait to use this excuse with my mates who are all about 10x fitter than I am and ride up near-verticals. :D

Nvm :( I misread that article. I just looked at the picture and read the caption under it.
it seems there was another race (pedalling included) which the guy on the mtb won.

Although, the other riders were still just MTBers on road bikes, so probably still scared of hard work ;)

lolz mountain bikers being lazy is so true.

A guy was not amused at my ability to climb with a 36t front ring whilst he was struggling with his 22t up front.

Rather be fast and look gay than be slow and gay :P

Evening chaps,

Complete moron when it comes to bikes so I don't really know what I'm looking for, but just started a new job within a decent distance from home, so looking to splash on a decent bike. It won't just be used for commuting (10-15 miles round-trip, rural, no city roads/traffic) and I will be using it for fitness two/three times a week (perhaps the morning 6 mile commute and a 15-20 home) and good 30-40 miles at the weekend as well (around Jersey), but no racing or competitions.

Looking to spend between £400-600, preferably at the lower end. I've been looking at the Boardman Race or Comp (read some good reviews), Wiggle have 20% off and I won't pay VAT so I can have the Race for £443, or the Comp for £553 (delivered).

Is the Comp worth the extra £100 for my usage? I have no intention of ever using it for anything other than maintaining fitness, but if the build quality and components are that much better I'd be willing to stretch up.

Outside of the Boardmans, I was looking at the Specialized Allez Compact, £504 delivered on Evans, any good?

Any help appreciated.

The Boardman comp that you linked to is a track bike (not suitable for riding on the road). I know that they do a normal road bike version of it as well, but i cant find it (wiggle hide all of the boardman stuff from me because im in the uk).

The boardman race is a fair bit better than specialized.

Hmm think their might be some Wiggle redirects going on there! I can't buy any if I change my location from Jersey to UK either, and the Comp page/picture I see definitely isn't single speed. The description says

Sportive and versatility are the Road Comp's best virtues - thanks to it's lightweight and efficient frame, wide ratio gearing, full mudguard compatibility combined with an efficient yet comfortable geometry you really can climb any mountain!

....
Shifters: SRAM APEX 10 speed
Front Derailleur: SRAM APEX
Rear Derailleur: SRAM APEX
...

Fitness wise I'm good, I can also take the flat, short route there in the mornings to take it easy and a longer 2x-hill route home.

I suppose I should have a better wander around online tomorrow, do some research and look in that other thread, although for only £443 I might just have a lunch time splurge :D
