I've had a set of superstar switch evo hubs for around 3 years and cant complain. The bearings felt rough last year so i bought a set for around $10 from local bearing merchant and swapped them over myself within an hour and viola brand new feel wheelz :D . There not rebranded hubs there superstars own, they make the gear themselves now with fancy machines. My hubs are laced to superstar am490 rims which im pretty sure are alex rims but not 100%. Full wheel set cost less than £150 (nips n spokes inc)

Anyone on here run a Nukeproof Mega AM?

I got a Mega AM 275:

It's heavy but damn sure fun :D

What type of weight we talking buddy? I take it that's the Pro?

It's got to be knocking on the 15kg mark so just over 33pound. Downhill it's so fun though and playful, easy to move where ya want it to but on long steep tech you know your lugging it around. Could do with a shorter stem too as the 60mm is bridging on Xc ;). There's little weight to be saved in components it carries it's weight in the frame so you could spend hundreds on carbon parts and still be over 30 pound.

The brakes are extremely powerful being 4 pot and the lever feel is spot on though I prefer shimanos stubby levers, you definitely only need 1 finger braking with the avid trails.

I've had a fair bit of trouble with the rear axle, it comes loose all the time so I've tried loctiting but only medium loctite. It's held so far, not a major problem as it's not the maxle which comes loose but the axle the maxle goes through.

The rear shock is a pleasure to work with and use, a massive step from fox's air cans which just blow through travel unless high pressured.

It came with a 36t front ring which was extremely optimistic given the 11-34 cassette, so a race face 32t narrow wide went on straight away.

The x9 shifter and mech have been flawless, outperformed my old xt setup hands down, though I do miss the shifting down with your index finger which the xt had you can only thumb shift with x9.

Hi guys,

After a bit of advice if you'd be so kind...

Recently have been thinking about 'improving' my little bike, having only ever changed very simple things (pedals, handlebar, seat etc) I'm a little bit worried about messing it up!

Also despite reading up online about different things I'm not even sure where to start, there seems to be a big focus on weight saving? Have read about changing to a 2x9 set up and being that I don't really use the largest chain ring thought this might be a good start?

I'm no expert rider or anything I just enjoy being out up the hills and on the moors and there isn't really anything wrong with the bike as such and not looking to spend a fortune, suppose i'm hoping to have a play around but not sure what would be the most viable upgrades for me :o

This is my current set up, when looking at that is there anything glaringly obvious to be in need of upgrade?

Forme Stag
• Fork: RockShox Recon Silver TK Solo Air 26", 1-1/8" steerer, travel 100mm
• Cranks: Shimano FC-M590-L, Deore, 44x32x22t
• Front Derailleur: Shimano Fd-m590l6, top-swing dual-pull band type(34.9mm), cs-angle: 66-69
• Rear Derailleur: Shimano Rd-m772sgs, xt shadow, 9-speed top-normal, low profile, direct attachment
• Shifters: Shimano Sl-m660 l/r slx 27 speed
• Cassette: Shimano CS-HG50-9 11-12-14-16-18-21-24-28-32t
• Front Hub: Formula DC19 One23 branded
• Rear Hub: Formula DC22 One23 branded
• Front Brake: Shimano BR-M445 hydraulic disc brake w/SM-RT51 160mm rotor, 6-bolt type
• Rear Brake: Shimano BR-M445 hydraulic disc brake w/SM-RT51 160mm rotor, 6-bolt type

Thanks for any help/advice! :)

If you're not finding you need anything extra, I wouldn't waste your money. A strip down and lube is always good fun though. Allows you to clean bits you can't normally get too. Depending how old , it's worth replacing bearings in your hubs/headset etc too. Plus it allows you to know your way round it better.

That is probably the sensible option, think once I started thinking baout it got a bit swept up with the idea :p

I'll look into doing that, not something I've ever done with the bike so may well need doing.

Thanks! :)

I've bought loads of new bits for no reason. I feel your pain.

I stripped my bike down in work one day though, replaced all the cables and messed about with the rear derailer etc.

It was good fun, as one of the guys in work was doing it also so was easy to bounce ideas off each other. None of it is difficult though.

I assume you can take off the 3rd ring and alter your shifter so it can't move into the 3rd ring. I doubt you'd save a great deal of weight though? Going 1x9/10 can save a fair amount though. But then if it makes going up more difficult, it's not worth the weight saving.

I decided against buying a Nukeproof, had a go of one and the sizing is too odd for me and it feels like a downgrade tbh.

Ended up buying Hope Hoops with Flow Rims and some nice new XT brakes which are the absolute ticket! Just need to ship out the Formula RX's

What tubeless systems are people running? I fancy going back to it but last time I ran it was with DeeMax's which is a different setup so these flows.

Hehe yea would be easy to spend a lot of money... Probably just as well I don't have a lot to spend! :p

Hoping when I have a weekend free next stripping it down and giving it a good once over, that will hopefully feel a lot better for it without needing to get anything.

Not sure a whole lot of weight would be saved, I like the idea of doing away with the excess but like you say there is likely little point, was just something I read about... Glad I came here before I went off getting myself into a mess buying random stuff and turning my bike into some sort of frakenstein :p
