hey guys, Planning a week to south wales from the 2nd october to the 7th. Going bike park wales for the first time, can anyone recommend the best places to stay? ideally camping as we dont have much money, but a fairly "quiet" campsite would be ideal. Ive looked at some cottages etc nearby but all are to expensive.

Also if we stay close to bikepark wales is there any other riding nearby anyone can recommend? be it natural trials or what have you!

cheers for any advice!

i've just noticed the rear shock on my b-i-l's cannondale is mounted the other way round compared to most rear shocks i've seen - does this confer any advantage or is it just cannondale being a little odd?

It doesnt matter what way your shocks mounted, mainly for ease of reaching pro pedal.

Had a nice ride over on the Purbecks today. Well maybe nice, definitely hard work.

Things I learned today:

1) Don't plan a ride that has 3 miles of climbing at the very start
2) I'm unfit
3) I was wrong about Reverbs when I said I didn't see the point when they first came out
4) I'm unfit
5) The Purbecks have some awesome riding, albeit you have to climb to get to it
6) There's no way I'm fit enough to ditch my granny yet :D

Where do you ride? I do the Purbeck loads cos i grew up there.

My favourite route is worth matravers, swire head, across the valley, up the barrow, over to corfe, up the big barrow over and down nine barrow down, up to old Harry's , lunch at studland, then back to worth on the Purbeck way. I don't know many other routes. I would love to have some other options.

It's the first time I've been onto the purbeck despite living in the New Forest all my life and working in Poole for 9 years :D planned out a route on ridewithgps before hand but had no real idea where I was going.

Basically I started at Corfe and joined the purbeck way by the sandy hill carpark and followed the bridleway all the way to old Harry. Then went into Studland and followed the single track bridleway through the golf course passed "franks tank" (?). Hard work, ridewithgps elevation data always under estimates I really should've leaned that by now.

If you've got any stravas I can noseu at that'd be great, I'll definitely go back.

Had a bad off today, and destroyed my front wheel :( cracked it buckled it the lot :(

Also i cant seem to thread the thru axle either, Whats the best thing to do now? should i buy a wheel online, its a DT Swiss M 1900 Spline. There on chainreaction but 27.5 is out of stock :/ Anyone recommend some others? up to £150? Im guessing il need to take it to a bike shop to be built and that because i have no idea!!

Cant recommend a camp site but as for riding there is absolutely tons of it. What type of riding do you like? DH style tracks, flat tracks, etc.. how many of you is there

I don't use Strava but I think my friend does, I will check and see if he has anything recorded. You have basically done a quarter of the loop. The north part of your loop is the bit we avoid because Frank's Tank is fun but it is only a couple of minutes long and dumps you in the middle of nowhere. Once we get to Studland, we loop back to Swanage and onto the Priests Way, over to Kingston, Kimmeridge across and back to Corfe.

Yeah looking at the bits you said earlier I kinda figured I was on a much shorter loop :D

Thanks for the pointers, I'll check them out. You're right about franks tank, great little bit of singletrack but the climb back onto the purbeck way was a killer.

Due to the freehub seizing on the 2014 Giant Trance 27.5 1 that my friend is selling to me after only 4 weeks of ownership when I got to Swinley today, I ended up hiring a Bird Zero 3 with upgraded Shimano SLX brakes and gears.

What a fantastic bike! They only had a medium one available, but I would like to try a large if I was to buy one. The Maxxis Ardent tyres really performed well, and I was able to go around corners much quicker than I have been on my friend's Specialized 29er hardtail that I've been borrowing for a few weeks.

I think I really want a hardtail now to compliment the Trance. I'll have to wait a while to recover from purchasing the Trance, roof racks, shoes etc etc. but I can see it being a great alternative to a full-sus bike.

In other news, my friend bought a Haibike yesterday (link) with 180mm Fox 36 Talas fork, 26" wheels and a Bosch electric motor :) Climbing on that thing is such a joy, as you'd expect! It is however very heavy at 23kg, and you do notice it in the corners. The handlebars are massive at 790mm. He left me for dead on a few sections, and when I caught up he was hardly out of breath, even though he was only using Eco mode the whole time.

I'm keen to see how the technology develops over the next few years.

EDIT: Here's a video of what can be achieved on the Haibike:
