*** Big Fat Weight Loss Thread ***

Milestone reached today: I've shed a stone! Now 13 stone 8 ounces. 20lbs left to go

I could lose it more quickly if I ate smaller dinners but I love food!

Well done. I'm in the same boat, 20lbs to go now. Given myself until the summer solstice to do it, so that should be 1lb a week. Plenty of time and means I can eat junk along the way. Chocolate waffles for breakfast this morning. :p

I've been really slack recently. I stopped weighing myself, as i'd generally been at a good maintenance weight and i felt i hadn't been eating too badly.

Through a few injuries i've not ran much over the last few weeks and only averaged around 13miles a week. With some PT weight sessions i've also got a bit more muscle which had made my shape better and i was feeling ok about myself.

Got around to it today and was up to 99kg. So need to be more mindful as it's then a slippy slope.

First week on the "zigzag" calorie plan and I lost absolutely zero. But I suspect that might be due to putting some water weight back on after the 3.2kg loss the week before. Now, I should stick to it and try it again another week but I'm terrible for doing that. Because it didn't appear to work immediately, I've gone on to something else now which is taking the daily activity figure from my Garmin watch and using that as a basis on how many calories to eat.

In the 18 months I've been doing this, I've never really counted calories once as I'm not convinced it works. Just ate <130g carbs a day but even that doesn't seem to be working now as I get nearer to goal. Gah.

As for exercise, I got a new book about heart monitor training so I went out this morning to try and find my max HR. Got it to 195 and thought I better stop as my legs were turning to jelly half up way up the third hill climb. I was well impressed though, not bad for an old geezer is 195.

I'm doing ok, record my weight once a week and 5lbs down in 2 weeks now. I'm happy enough to see a lb a week loss, so anything more than that is a plus. I've got a fitbit now so that keeps encouraging me to move, and spending an hour a day on the treadmill is getting my stepcount up.

I was at 175 pounds (12st 7lb) yesterday morning down from 185 (13st 3lb) since I started my calorie diet on 14th January. I think I must be losing about an actual pound or just over per week, and five or six pounds of that must have been fluid retention in the first week or so. I must say though, my appetite hasn't reduced so everyday is always a struggle of willpower not to snack too much in between lunch and dinner. I miss having breakfast and the only breakfast I've had is porridge if I'm going for a jog.

I don't really see how it can't? It's kind of the basis for pretty much ever diet there is...

This is my problem. I'm sure people had made comments about 'your stomach will shrink' or 'you get used to it' but they're not true for me. I spend most of my time hungry :(

I just can't break below the 100kg barrier for 3 months now, I get close but then my appetite gets monstrous and I end up deviating from the diet andd bouncing back to 103kg.

Yep, it's bloody difficult. I think its sugar that mostly keeps our appetite going. For instance, I have a crunchie or double decker, one or two garibaldis and fruit each day as snacks. That's nothing compared to the amount of chocolate, biscuits and cakes I used to eat, and fortunately I'm still losing weight. But if I was to completely cut out all sugar stuff, I think the appetite would reduce. But who can do that, lol?? I can't! Here's an interesting video on that subject though. His main points are to lose appetite for sugar and you'll be less hungry.

I haven’t watched that video yet but if you cut out the sugar you have to replace it with something else, eg fat. I found it difficult to eat spoonfuls of butter or coconut oil when I was hungry on keto.

Well I've been doing no refined sugar since start of this month, zero changes in terms of appetite going down.

Not like it eat simple carbs all day either, I'm past 70g of fibre just about every day and even then my appetite is really bad, especially towards the night as I rarely feel full. Honestly if someone has any tips how to control that bugger, I'm all ears :D

Interesting to hear that no sugar didn't reduce the appetite.

Might sound like a diet cliche, but I'm finding munching on celery really helps. It's got a good crunch too. I sometimes spread fat free cottage cheese on it.

Just to clarify I'm still eating fruit but I'm not eating anything containing refined sugar, from dessert to even sauces or anything that has sugar listed as an ingridient that isn't naturally occuring.

Still eating plenty of sugars through fruit although I'm not going overboard with that, just my daily banana, apple and kiwi and a frozen fruit smoothie.

I actually have celery most days, can't stand it by itself but either make a "green" smoothie with it or blitz it in a chopper and use it to bulk out curries, sauces, etc

I'm not eating fruit at all currently, and have cut out all chocolate except a couple of squares of Lindt 70% a day. Luckily I find drinking water suppresses my appetite quite a bit, but I'm taking being hungry all the time as a good thing for weight loss.

I'm not sure if it's because I'm very active (10-15 hours a week) that I'm just hungry all the time.

I had a good bowl of porridge at 6:30, cycled to work (15 miles) and I'm bloody hungry again already! :(
Well, porridge is only a few hundred calories, and you've probably burnt more than that on the ride...
