*** Big Fat Weight Loss Thread ***

Well done for being brave enough to get on the scales.

Had to be done, give me kick up the ass to start the week strong :)

My "Not drinking" went out the window as we had a bbq for my mother in laws 70th, and so from 2pm till 1am i drank. A lot, although didn't really eat much either which didn't help.

Need a break and enjoy yourself every now and then. Sadly, for me it's every 'now', not so much 'then' :D

I thought you were done in here? :( I'm not bothering to discuss it with you as basically, I post something and then you make something up based slightly on that...

I actually hit the “Show ignored content” to see who was posting in here and as soon as I saw the name regretted it.

Get him on the ignore list and this place is much better! :D

Down around 4kg so far since my original post, will obviously be a lot of water weight and expecting the losses to slow down now :)

Went to the pub Saturday and had two pints and fish and chips, finished the day on 3000 calories

New box of meals arrived today though and was so relieved haha!

He's the same in every thread. He believes he can speak his opinion into fact, it's painful. You've made the correct choice ignoring him.

Get him on the ignore list and this place is much better! :D

Oh don't worry, I'm well aware. The only reason I don't have him actually set on ignore is because he's actually amusing with some of the rubbish he talks, which is the territory we're getting into now.

Lol at people backing up that you should still eat doner kebabs and just do more cardio because fixing your diet is the lazy way to do it.

Like this. No-one has said this at all and now we've moved into the 'him being amusing' territory, rather than someone to discuss something with. Maybe I finally should move him onto the growing list... especially if he's going to be posting rubbish in this thread now. :(

Hmmm...so scales aren't moving much weight wise but i'm doing low level calisthenics at the moment and i've noticed that my muscle reading has increased a little and also my BMR is steadily climbing day by day.

While it's widely known that bio impedence scales aren't massively accurate, you can still use it to measure progress. Huge pinch of salt taken with the readings though.

Hopefully muscle building and fat coming off at the same time!

Do you take measurements at all? Usually a more reliable way to tell what's actually happening :)

I know there is a grace period when a beginner begins working out that they can actually burn some fat and build muscle at the same time, it's short lived however. I wonder if i'm back to beginner status with my break from exercise the last few years :D

Yeah, I have the obvious, waist, mid section, chest, tops of legs, etc and also photos once per week.

It's amazing how fast muscle just disappears when you don't use it, when I tore my meniscus in my knee in 2016 I couldn't use my left leg for three weeks between the injury and surgery, and I went from having a massive rugby leg to a floppy mess of a quad in that space!

If only muscle went into shape as quickly as it loses it :(

Interesting debate on BMI, personally I've found it to be a useful gauge to use but agree properly measured BF% is better but a faff.

My own little update, I think I posted back in January after stopping smoking and loosing around 27 KG (or about 4 stone) and getting to about 21% BF (that was between Aug and Jan). Since January it's been slower progress, only dropping 13 KG (in a similar 4 month period). Overall though that's about 6.3 stone  down and body fat down to 15.5% (that was tougher!) and right in the middle of the healthy BMI range. Where it was certainly a little noticable in January now everyone how's not seen me for a while is quite taken back! It's nice to be able to slowly start adding in some treats. Weirdly a lot of the stuff I was doing to lose weight has become just normal and preferred to me, that's just things like choosing more healthy options for dinner or cycling / walking. Although I was always very sceptical of 'oh it's a life style change not a diet' talk - I honestly think that is true. So I guess this really ends my weight loss stuff, but again wanted to wish you all good luck in your own quests to lose the pounds :) I think I shared some tips on my last post about what helped me, so I guess I'd add

* Be prepared to increase exercise when the weight loss starts to really slow - this happened a fair bit (maybe 4 times) where I legit stopped losing any weight at all, even with the more restricted diet. The temptation is to reduce calorie intake, but that didn't work. What did was to surge on exercise (just for a day or two) and that seemed to kick my body back into loosing weight. Might not work for everyone though haha.

* Wait a couple of days to check impact of changes to diet - similar to the above, but it's easy to want to jump on the scales after an active weekend or when you've behaved well with your diet, but in general (at least for me) it didn't become clear for about 3-4 days.

* Change your clothes! Probably after a few months it's easy to forgot / not notice, but waist size tended to decrease by about an inch and a bit with each stone, so for me that was from about 40" to now around 30" / 31". It's both a reward and to be totally honest needed. My mini rule was if I can fit my fist (vertically) between my belly and my jeans waist band then it's time to consider new clothes.

* Use exercise to help with toning if you're dropping a lot of weight - we've probably all seen pictures of 'lose skin' after weight loss, and tbh what really helped me was targeted strength training on those areas (so for me more core like exercises , sit ups, plank style stuff but also general condition like cycling / swimming), after a few weeks things started to get better.

* Near the end stop thinking about 'when this will end' and more about how do you start to integrate more normal things, for me that's starting to rotate out my calorie light meal and rotate in more 'fun' options.

For those wondering "is it worth it?" all I can say is yes - apart from the obvious health benefits - it's more about self confidence and that means you do the things you wouldn't do before.

Thanks,

UL

That's really well done. I've lost the same amount of weight as you, but I can't currently get below about 19% BF. Mind you, I started at 36+%, so I'm plenty happy at 19%. I've got to the point, like you, that I feel like it's done, I'm happy and I will just maintain this.

Nice one AndryCr15 :) 19% is excellent esp from 36%+! Thank thank you ic1male and megahurtz400

I had a wobble which turned into me nearly abandoning the diet :( The week before last I weighed in at 13stone 1lb 4oz, so close to the 13stone mark! Then a family member fell ill and I was rushing off to hospital straight from work, and the patio project, which was essentially all the exercise I've been doing, was finished. So I had a bit of a relapse which consisted of takeaway food for convenience and no exercise, apart from two thirty minute walks per day. Currently tipping the scales at 13 stone 4lb but it's definitely still on the rise, metabolism has slowed and cravings for junk food are back.

As soon as we get some decent weather I'll get back in the saddle and do some long rides, I haven't ridden since last year and am no longer an all weather cyclist!

Has anyone got any food diaries to share? I really need inspiration for foods. @ultralaser well done, I'd like to see what you were/are eating if you don't mind?

Sorry for the very late reply. So in general it was about 120g of fresh pasta, with a load of tomatoes, cucumber, peppers, a small tin of tuna (60g) and a fresh sauce (super market bought). I'd mix in fresh fruit accross the day and a daily essential Costa / Starbucks coffee in the AM (that was my one real treat!). If I felt a little under engergised then I'd add to that (with healthy options but that was rare maybe twice a week). I still use that meal as a base, and then pivot when I want (so it might mean eating that 3-4 days a week now and a more normal meal for the other days). I would not at all recommend this though if you're super keen on building muscle as you'll require a LOT more protien - when I have an off day I will try (and normally do succeed) on boosting the exercise a bit. After my last post I'm pretty much at the same weight (I seem to naturally go up and down about 1kg a week or so), maybe a little lower body fat, but exercise is higher for sure and most of that low intensity with light weight and swimming / cycling.

Definitely recommend having a base (I.e. by default I will eat this) meal that is a lower calorie option, and then occasionally moving from it if you need. I'm defo sticking to that here :) Having lower as default and upping it seems easier than a higher calorie diet by default and dieting.

I hardly did anything for 10 years, I was like an Ethiopian. Trying to get going again though.

I'd be interested if the "larger" guys have had blood pressure checked? My BP shot up during Covid and my weight had crept up about a stone. I've lost the weight now but BP needed meds to bring down. Now its about getting fit rather than weight for me. Losing a stone was surprisingly easy if i distract myself doing anything except eating :-)
