Big Tech Authoritarianism

Specifically in this case, the BBC reported that Trump had called the people who stormed the government building "patriots" in a tweet.

He did say exactly that in a tweet, he also said they were special and to go home in a tweeted video. His original tweet got him his first 12 hour ban.

What he actually said was that the 75 million people who voted for him were patriots. He specifically stated the 75 million figure. He was explicitly referring to everyone who voted for him. Not the people who stormed the government building.

He also said that, and the BBC reported both accurately.

Mr Trump was locked out of his account for 12 hours on Wednesday after he called the people who stormed the US Capitol "patriots

After being allowed back on Twitter, Mr Trump posted two tweets on Friday that the company cited as the final straws.

In one, he wrote: "The 75,000,000 great American Patriots who voted for me, AMERICA FIRST, and MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN, will have a GIANT VOICE long into the future. They will not be disrespected or treated unfairly in any way, shape or form!!!"

So the purges have begun. This is totally normal and fine.
Good thing all the tech companies are "the good guys" right?
Definitely the right thing to do. Jesus wept.

Like a said earlier in the thread, the tech companies were the "bad guys" when leave won the EU referendum result.

It's just none stop confirmation bias with people pandering to their 'side'.

Where they? I thought that was the Tories, nationalists and the gullible?

Joking (sort of) aside, Social Media companies are arguably still bad guys for allowing the spread of misinformation regardless of the topic.
Little too late for Trump, he’s had his cake, eaten it and can play victim now of what he’s been blabbing on about for years. But at least there’s no more cake for him.

Personally I have mixed feelings about twitter's actions. On the one hand there's some pleasure in getting rid of the narcissistic idiot but on the other sits the saying "keep you enemies close".

It's tough because if there was evidence to suggest the general public could apply even a small amount of critical thinking and separate fact from lie then I'd be firmly on the side of leaving him to make a complete fool of himself. Sadly I think the actions witnessed over the last few days (and indeed since 2016) show that to be anything but the case.

I am however still conflicted about it. There's a ton of hypocrisy floating about though and no one has answered my previous question about Abu Hamza yet.

Yep. Is society a better place now Britain First, EDL and the like aren't spreading their poison into peoples Facebook feed everyday? Damn right it is. I don't care if its right wing racism and bigotry or left wing. Putting it in people's faces every day is never going to be a good thing for society. Let it fester in the fringe internet where it will just poison those minds that are already lost to it.

"Censorship and authoritarianism is my bag baby, yeah"

No.

The companies have decided to decline to do further business with people that are actively and consistently being bad for business, or breaking the law.

Parlour for example could find hosting away from Amazon's cloud if they wanted, but they probably went with it because it was cheap and easy.

About the only thing being on twitter/facebook/google/apple does is make it slightly easier for access, there is nothing stopping you accessing an actual website you've created and arranged hosting for with a provider that doesn't mind your nonsense, it's just easier to drop an app on an app store and use another companies existing app to promote your views.

I saw a very good example of how not being on amazon/apple/google doesn't hurt organisations/companies if they've actually got something people want - only fans whcih somehow manages to monetise something that you can find in vast amounts for nothing (porn - and it does so whilst the money goes to the people making it which is unusual for paid for access porn online).

Ok so being cut of from payment methods is the next step.

When PayPal MasterCard and visa decide you're not woke enough.

That's also fine because "insert same reply"

People with toxic opinions shouldn't be allowed a platform to deliver their poison, no matter who they are. Trump was stirring up Hate, and rightly banned.

So is BLM and AntiFa using the same platform to stir up racial hatred and call for violence, including the murder of those they don't agree with, OK or do you think that those two groups should also be banned from social media too?

Isn't only fans more personalized porn? I sadly have no idea, :p,
Isn't there non porn only fans too?

I am a conservative and it's clear I am not welcome on social media and routinely attacked for hardly radical ideas.

Right now on Twitter the trending is calling for the hanging of the vice President. Calling for the death of anyone because they said something you dislike is extremely concerning. If this was calling for the hanging of BLM figures better believe there would be an out cry and would be shut down by the platform instantly.

Big tech has a power beyond reasoning. If you fall on the side of wrong think and shut out of the platform your voice is lost and the world turns into a bigger echo chamber.

Social media has the power to influence billions of people and decide what information they see and what they don't. Payment services like PayPal have the power to shut down any project they like. Google can remove your website from it's engine simply because they dislike you and your traffic is gone.

I never thought I would say this but clearly it's gone to far with the power they have. I'm scared how social media has warped our world view and allowed open attacks and witch hunts on people for no good reason simply because they fall on the wrong side of the political spectrum.

Antifa for example have been burning down buildings, destroying property, doxxing people, making threats, openly calling for people's death and they're still active on Facebook and Twitter. Clearly they're on the correct side.

We know the answer already. Of course it's fine because they are today's good guys. Maybe tomorrows enemies, depending on how the winds blow.

Not for me, it is time the big social Media companies were forced to take responsibility for the content on them. You can’t ban antifa or BLM because they are not individuals or even defined organisations but lies and hate should be removed. Freedom of speech isn’t freedom from the consequences of saying stupid things.

The amount of hate speech, threats and lies that all the big social platforms promote is scary. The law needs changing to make them responsible for it then watch it all disappear back to the fringes where it belongs. Facebook and Twitter have given a platform to idiots from all sides of the spectrum trump is just a really visible example. They have amplified the message, allowed targeted paid for adds that are full of lies etc etc etc. Banning trump is a good start but these mega corporations need to make real change or we will see more crazy decisions like Brexit, Trump being president and the rise of far right/left and ‘religious’ stupidity.

People are always quick to accuse the BBC of lies and bias, totally oblivious to the fact that the articles are there for anyone to view and a complaints process available to anyone who has a grievance.

Trump overstepped the mark and repercussion was swift, it's no more complicated than that. For someone who liked to whip up the rabid mob with chants about locking people up, karma might be closer than he thinks.

Any groups stirring up racial hatred, violence and murder should not only get the ban hammer but perpetrators should have to feel the wrath of the law too. I'm not against Antifa or BLM, I am against extremism, and you're mentioning what I'd consider the extreme views in these groups. It must be remembered that extremes exist everywhere, religion, football fans, AMD vs Nvidia fanbois, etc! People go too far.

The left will be shocked when there's a civil war and wonder why

End of the day it's a private platform, you follow their rules or you can't use it. Go ahead and mention a competitor on here and see how that goes for you.
