Biggest jump in Gaming?

Daytona, Ridge Racer.

Both pretty much hit at the same time in the arcades, both something 100% more than anything before.

Definatley the start of a new era in arcade racing games imo.

In the home, there's no looking beyond 3d cards, a game is take your pick.

Gran turismo was one heck of a leap, counterstrike put multiplayer at the top of most peoples want to do's.

I didn't have PC until I was about 9-10 as far as I can remember, but the biggest jump for me was playing Starfox on the snes. Going from 2D to 3D was amazing.

however playing Counterstrike for the first time was fantastic, playing with other people around the world? it's what I always wanted to do!

today it's still great playing online games but not as good as the old 56k days.

Definitely Quake. Growing up on Wolfenstein and Doom, this game was... well, you know. And I had no 3dfx either, I was playing this on a 150MHz processor, a computer with a massive 800MB hard drive and an OTT 64MB RAM. Good days.

On that vein, FFVII - just because I was so into the SNES versions. Played V first, then an older one and bought VI on release with 2 months' pocket money. The jump in that was incredible - I nearly wet myself when Cloud drove the bike through the Shinra HQ window.

Half Life for presentation of narrative.

Deus Ex for a narrative that I cared about

Far Cry for the first open game world environments that seemed pretty much 'real' (I'm not talking graphics) to me.

Biggest jump in gaming is probably the invention of the mmorpg and other forms of multiplayer games. Look at the popularity of such titles as counter strike and world of warcraft etc. The ability for more than a handful of people to play together for me is the biggest leap in gaming so far.

mirrors edge.....

I see what you did there :p

Had to be for me quake 2, and hl2, as these both made me think that games would be fun for me when I grew up, as until then (i dont know what age I was) games were just for children and adults didn't play them. Once I had a go on these I knew I would be into gaming for years to come.

Biggest jump in Gaming?
For me it has to be EverQuest back in 1999, my first delve into online gaming, I used to miss work because I was still playing it at 8am in the morning I was totally addicted to it, loved it.

3dfx Card and Quake, after playing games in 320x240 at 20fps suddenly getting 640x480 at 30fps with all the extra effects was amazing.

Having never played a pc or online game before, then being fully immersed into Counter strike, that for me was a huge jump which since then all consoles have gone out of the window.

One of the largest factor's in gaming aside from hardware improvements is the internet though, i dont know about you guys but single player campaigns barely hold my interest after being able to interact with other players.

For graphics, Quake.
For gameplay, Doom over LAN.

But my favourite jump was Starcraft for the story. I was still gazing at the monitor all the way through the credits digesting the ending. That was the first time I'd been told a game story so well.

I must admit when I went from the C64 and (even now) loving the games for there sheer gameplay values then moving to the Amiga and Shadow of the Beast was a massive eye opener!

Single players are great though - take Batman for example!

for me it would have to be Doom, coming from an Amiga1200 to a pc 66mhz pentium and shareware 1st episode of Doom was incredible, the gfx were amazing and fast and smooth plus i had a chainsaw muhahahahaha :)

Actually - on the Mirror's Edge side of things - Battlefield 1942 when you fly a plane as high as it will go and then get out.

Cue some of the best gaming audio ever.

3d acceleration - going from quake to glquake was mind blowing!
suddenly 3D graphics that were on par with, or even better, than arcade machines was possible on a PC - it spelled the death of arcades and the birth of a new age in pc gaming.
maybe you have to old to fully grasp how momentous it was :)
