Biggest jump in Gaming?

Doom (ID tech 1)
Quake II (ID tech 2)
Half-life (ID tech 2)
Doom 3 (ID tech 4)
Farcry (CryEngine)
GTA3
Crysis (CryEngine 2)

Some of the biggest jumps in gaming mainly due to their engines excluding Half-life which was built on Quake technology. To me Half-Life's story telling represented a massive jump in production values and length. A true rival to other entertainment types.

GTA3 is quite obvious. Another great combination of fantastic engine and storytelling. Bringing GTA to the 3d world was predictable but nonetheless a stroke of genius.

Crysis may seem odd as so many people discount it, but an engine truly well ahead of its time. So much so that they actually infuriated most gamers because the hardware simply isnt mature enough.

And it still makes me wonder why people question Carmack.. he may sound like a whiney teenager, but he sure knows how to develop an engine.

The 3Dfx/Voodoo card, definitely.

Can still remember loading up Longbow 2 for the first time and being blown away by the (then) great graphics, lighting effects, missile trails etc.

And strange to relate, in 2001 when I bought my first Geforce card - the graphics looked worse!

Biggest jump IMO was Quake:

-First proper 3D FPS
-Killer app for 3d accelerator cards
-Introduced client<->server model over TCP/IP into gaming
-First game of it's type to give players so many customisation options via the console (an often overlooked achievement).
-Spawned the emergence of online 'clans'
-Helped to make modding and mapping more mainstream (groundwork laid by Doom, of course)

Effectively the vast majority of what you see in modern day FPS is built on those foundations - console/config options, TCP/IP multiplayer, clan scene etc

BBC Micro and Elite.

Being serious here too. Before then there was so little games [OK, there were so few machines, however...]

If I had to pick one, it would be ID Tech 2.

For me playing Resident Evil on the old PS1 in the dark.

The big bloke that gets dropped from the helicopter and bursts through the wall at you.

Man did i jump then, had to use a spatula to get me of the ceiling. :D

boom boom :p

Biggest jump original doom

It was 3D done without a graphics card

It had dam cool sound even when most pc barely had any

Excellent gameplay and it was scary, which was a first for a game afaik

You could edit and make your own maps pretty easily with all sorts of lighting and open design, etc another first?

You could multiplay across computers even without a network card

Quake world? ...maybe

Quake world was indeed good, but from purely personal veiwpoint, UT simply beat in every area for me.

I even 'clanned' myself up and competed on Clanbase in both the iDOM & iCTF leagues. Best time Ive ever had on an online game to be honest (not including any pRon related online antics of course.!!:p)

Although HL1 was based on the Quake engine, I think what Valve did to keep the game going as long as possible in terms of tweaks and enhancements was pretty impressive and some of that code is apparently still present in HL2.

But the biggest jaw dropper for me was when I first played Quake 1, HL1 is a close second.

I would say the jump in games utilising the 3D accelerators like 3DFX and the like made a huge leap forward, Gl Quake,Unreal, Tomb Raider. All made a huge difference to the way games looked on screen.
I think Unreal was one of them games that made you say WOW, the GFX's was amazing and made you feel like you were actually on a different planet, plus i jumped off that ledge on the first level and my mind thought i was falling for a second which was awesome too :).
