Biggest 'WOW!' factor from a component you've upgraded?

i think the most i've been wowed by an upgrade was many years ago when i went from a matrox mistique graphics card to the voodoo1 :)

and going from an adlib? sound card to the creative awe 64 gold sound card :)

for me I think is my case The Original Staker always had cheapy cases £10-15 etc etc then one day saw stacker and had to spend that £100. Then dial up to broadband. But going from 56k to 1.2mb to 7.5m to about 3 or 4 is a pain. Each time a different move.

8800GT over a 7600GS. Well it was the whole system upgrade really,

5000+ X2, 4GB RAM, 7600GS to Q6600, 4GB faster ram, 8800GT. Just remember running the Photoshop speedtest and completing it in 18 seconds, compared with just shy of a minute. Then booting up 3DMark06 and watching all the demo's run through at a proper framerate!

I would have to say without a doubt it was going from my very bad purchase when I knew nothing about computers of a FX5200 to a 6600GT. It was like buying a new computer game wise and gaming is mostly what I do.

going from a athlon xp 64 3000+ with 512 Ram and a 5200 Ultra GPU to

a Q6600 @3.2Ghz with 4 GB of ram and a 8800 GT

I saw quite a jump

2nd that ^^

I 2nd that ^^^ getting my first Voodoo 1 3dfx cardand playing Quake GL all through the night - I could not believe the difference a £99 card made!!!

These were the days when you still had a dedicated 2d card with small lead which ran from your 2d card to the back of the 3d card at the back of the PC.
What happened to 3dfx ????

Some no name card followed by a morpheus ti500! a long time ago, then 15>17>19>20>24>30" monitor - it just gets better.. doubt i would go bigger than this now though.

I must say upgrading from a 15" CRT to a 19" TFT was the biggest WOW for me. Felt like i had to move my chair back to see the whole screen at once :D

Upgrading from my Dell 22" to a Hyundai 24". Sounds weird, I know.

I'd only had the Dell for a month and was using a Hyundai 19" before. I was surprised just how big the jump was from the 19"/22" to a 24", it really gave me the effect I wanted. Going from the 19" to the 22" didn't feel that different since they were the same height, just slightly more in length.

Upgraded the ram on an XP machine from 256mb to 768mb and the difference was huge.
Also, upgradded from 2 6600 in sli :o to a 7900GTX,difference was huge there aswell. hopefully the upgrade to a GTX280 will be as good.
And goin from a 19 5:4 to a 24inch 16:10 was huge aswell.

Wow, snap on the big wows. That jump going up from 256MB to double that or more in XP is probably one of the best I have ever made too. Going from a 19" CRT to my 24" Dell LCD was also night and day.

Other biggest for me was from a 386 to a Pentium 2. That was one hell of a jump.

These days I never really get a wow from CPU or Processor changes as I hop from one to another every 6-12 months so stuff is never that different.

i would say the biggest wow factors would be moving from a tnt2 32mb to a 9700pro.

moving from an x800xt to a 3870. (graphical quality boost)

moving from a dell 17" crt to a sony 19" tft (colours were amazing in comparison)

moving to 2gb of ram or more and being able to alt tab out of games in seconds

best of all moving from a sony 19" tft to a 24" samsung sm-2493. which i just got a few days ago.

other things of note; duel/multi screen setups, gigga LAN, getting my hands on a highly modified voodoo lian-li case. which is perfection.

other things like raptors in raid-0 duel core CPUs, soundcards 1ghz overclocking and the like didnt really have the same impact

When i went from
Althon xp 3200+
1GB ram
80GB HDD

to
Althon 64Bit 3000+
1GB Ram
200GB

Some reason i didnt notice much of a difference between

Althon X2 3800+
1GB
200GB

to
Q6600
4GB
500GB
