Bike security

They don't really work, a lot of bikes are shoved in to the back of a van and checked over before arriving wherever they are going.

my last bike came with one but I've not bothered continuing the subscription for it.

Be careful doing that, even the mk 3 is heavy and could do some serious damage if the worse happened.

Yeah, guess you are right, a 10kg chain can be something dangerous.
I will need to find a safer way to carry it, when I get my hands on it will be easier to think on something else.

I also bought a Xena X2 disk lock and a cover

There's nothing especially dangerous about a 10kg chain secured in a pillion carrier. Make sure the strap side is on top and adjust the strap ends so it clips down tight.

No more dangerous that a 144kg bike tumbling down the road behind you, bursting into bits along the way... not that you should even be worrying about such things.
The danger only comes when people wrap the chain around themselves instead of stowing it properly!

I'd be wary of a heavy chain in a tail bag but in a top box I'd be more comfortable. Just my opinion.

I've bought myself a 2m long 16mm Squire chain and padlock for home, not sure I'll be taking it anywhere with me though. I think for practicalities sake and given that I rarely take my bike anywhere where I'll leave it unattended for more than a couple of hours I'll go with a lighter carry chain and my alarmed disc lock.

I've also bought a kerb ramp so I can possibly get the bike into the front garden. Gonna be a while before I can pay to have the garden lowered and paved over but assuming i can maneuver a bike in there I should be able to chain it up to a tree.

Also gonna use an old mobile phone as CCTV when it's a parked up at night.

I've seen a few good deals on chains only and used chains which I fancied buying but does anyone how you choose the right padlock?

Fingers crossed I'll have a new bike by the weekend and I'll murder anyone that attempts to steal it.

I will get an Almax 16mm or 19mm... not sure yet... but needs to be 2 or 2.5M, I need to measure the pillar I will attach to :)
Not sure about the padlock yet, but I need to decide it asap because I will collect my bike next Tuesday.

I just got the chain/padlock package cause I genuinely have no idea how you choose the right padlock. I mean how do you know it'll fit the chain and how do you know the padlock isn't crap, cause I assume on a 16mm+ chain the padlock will be the weakest link.

There are some options for 16mm and 19mm chains.
The one that comes with the package is a Squire lock, it has a 12.7mm shackle, so it is the weakest link, but it is a good padlock and the version that comes with the package has the Mauer core, restricted version, (at least when I called Almax they said that) which is really good, also I found some padlocks that have a 14mm and 15mm shackle... but they are around £100 on the bay or £150 retail.

I just wish I understood what I'm looking for. I've seen several cheap chains with links between 10mm and 14mm but not sure which padlock fits and which are any good I think I'll just buy several supposedly decent ones and keep the one that fits lol.

I just received my 16mm Squire chain and padlock, I knew it'd be heavy but bloody hell! There's no way in hell I can envisage transporting this with me, anyone who manages to has my respect.

I was checking this ones: http://www.autokicker.com/products/motorcycle-luggage/tail-bags.html
looks like to be good quality.
For general luggage, quite possibly...
But as a lock carrier - No way. Too big and open. A proper chain carrier will be tight on the seat and just about big enough to get your sandwiches in.

Avoid anything where the key looks like your normal front door one.
Try for a disc detainer lock or a Mul-T-Lock type.
You will want a shroud covering the bolt where possible.

Most decent chains come with a lock anyway.

I have an ABUS City Chain X Plus for out and about. It does it's job and will stop the general herbert but I know if someone capable wants my bike it's goodbye bike.

I carry my almax in my rucksack, not all the time but when I know I'll be leaving my bike for a long time

The squire lock fits those chains
