Billion 7800N -early thoughts

Rather than starting a new thread I thought I'd resurrect this one.

Can anyone confirm what the warranty period is for the 7800N? I've read in some places that it's 2 years and mine has just died on the wireless front. I filled in the RMA form but got an email this morning saying it's out of warranty. I bought in on 01 Aug 11 so it would be just inside the 2 year warranty period if that's what it is.

Update:

It is indeed a 2 year warranty and I'm just inside it by a month! After sending Billion Support my logs my unit is suffering from wireless failure. Just waiting for them to arrange a return now so I'll probably get a refurb.

After looking round the web (whirpool site) there seems to be quite a few cases of this failure. Just glad it happened now and not next month.

I'm beginning to have wifi issues with mine. Had it almost 18 months. Works fine for days (even weeks) then suddenly some (but not all) devices won't be able to connect. The first time it was just my ipad, the second time just my desktop pc, the third time dads pc. Each time the only way I can sort it is by connecting my laptop directly to it by ethernet and performing a factory restore

It's weird - there seems to be a lifespan on some routers. Not sure whether its the temp they run at or what, but they just go flakey after a while. You may find that turning it off for long enough for it to cool down, say 10 minutes, will solve the problem (temporarily) just as much as the factory reset.

Good luck,

The glue they put on the wifi card eats through the traces on the pcb, that is why the wifi fails on these. I removed all the (unnecessary) glue from mine the day I got it.

It is pretty tricky as the glue is hard and you don't want to damage the pcb, I used a soldering iron so soften the glue then scraped it off with a knife.

Would this router be a decent alternative to a Draytek 2710vn?

I recently updated the firmware on my home 2710 and somehow its now knackered. Drops the connection randomly and managed an SNR Margin of 45! Nice. Line had been rock steady about 6 or 7db up to the point I did the firmware upgrade.

This is the 2nd Draytek product that has failed on me (all our offices have Draytek products) and I'm thinking a switch to a new manufacturer might be a good idea. I also like the idea of being able to tweak the SNR.

Did I read a few pages back that people are starting to develop problems with this router? I've had mine since the start of this thread pretty much and its been great, touch wood, but just recently I've had a few wireless issues and also a lot of re-syncs and unstable connections.

My actual phone line is crap (countryside, end of the line) so I don't know whether the connection issues are the lines fault but worryingly, in the past the router has generally been able to cope...

My line stats are currently:

I do tweak my snr and I usually manage a stable connection of at least 2/2.5 MB. The current connection was achieved with an snr tweak of 25.

Any ideas?

I wouldn't swap the Draytek for this. Draytek is corporate quality kit with a lot of useful options. The Billion is a good little router, but it's consumer kit.

Anyone know how to use QOS on the billion router? My kids are getting older and they are hogging the poor excuse for internet connection I get round these parts.

I've often thought about this too. Would have been handy today; had Steam going and no one else could do anything! Steam was hogging all 2MB of my connection...

I tried looking for guides a while back and I think I hit a wall. I've heard that the Billion forum isn't much use these days for 7800N owners either :(

If you look at the thread here it will give a guide on how to set up QoS.

As you will see, I set it up for my T-Mob Signal Box and all works fine on it.

Hi all, new to the forum but have been a customer with overclockers for many years (just down the road!).

Can I ask for your input on my current broadband speed and see if you think the Billion will have any positive impact on my speed.

The situation is that I'm using an old stable Netgear DS834G but as I live out in the sticks, I'm lucky to achieve a broadband speed of more than 2meg, and download speeds of 250kbps which as you can imagine, doesn't allow me to work and download at the same time!

The states of my current router are as follows:

ADSL Link-------------Downstream-----Upstream
Connection Speed-----3104 kbps-------448 kbps
Line Attenuation-------50.5 db---------26.5 db
Noise Margin SNR------15.5 db---------20 db

Would tweaking it down with a Billion help, or does the line attenuation rating look too high for it to be worthwhile.

Would value an opinion before I go spending £100+ on this router. Thanks.
