Billion 7800N -early thoughts

Hi folks,

Does anyone have the problem where their 'first' upload always fails?

Sometimes I try to upload a file on a website which has a 'browse' then you select a file from your computer, press upload, it fails a few seconds later.
But if you do it again, it then works?

I can't see what kind of setting that would be? But coming from a Belkin router, switching to the 7800N it has happened (never happened with the Belkin).

I am using it on a wired connection, latest firmware (1.06g).

Thanks :)

My 7800n wireless has packed in after 3 years, emailed Billion but got an email saying 'go away'.

Can you replace the pci card with anything, I have opened it up and you can easily remove it, but cannot find the card anywhere online. I emailed MSI and they said they don't make the card anymore. Any one have any ideas what I can put in it?

Here's a picture of the wifi card although it is different to the one used in my 7800n, mine uses one labeled MS6893.

After some googling It looks like it is the glue that billion used to hold the wifi card and wires in place that is causing some wifi cards to die. The glue turns brown over time and goes conductive/corrosive.

Carefully removing the glue and reseating the card might work but if the glue has eaten through traces or any components you'll need to try and find a replacement.

I haven't been able to find the MS-6893 but a well known auction site has plenty of cheap MS-6833 which look very similar and *might* work.

edit: I dont think the MS-6833 will work, you need a mini pci card with Ralink RT2880+RT2820 I would think. The only one I have found so far is the Sparklan WMIR-269GN and I haven't been able to find it for sale any where.

I found a site selling the Sparklan WMIR-269GN but they want £30 for it and although it should work in the 7800n there's no guarantee.

decmatt: have you tried removing the glue and reseating the card? this has worked for some people on other forums.

Will they not sell you a RT2880F? a google search just brings up the Sparklan.

As for removing the glue it wasn't easy, I don't think any chemicals will do it. I used a soldering iron to melt it then scraped it off with a tiny flat head screw driver.

Hi can i ask before i buy this Billion 7800N i see this has vpn so how can i set up vpn and will this hide my activity online?

VPN at the domestic level is for securing point to point links, its basically a way of providing a secure tunnel across the internet between two networks. If you just want to cover up your general internet activity then Onion Routing is a good place to start.
