Billion 7800N -early thoughts

just reading through this and just wondering what the plus side would be for a 8meg mad bt line, over the current home hub 2 (yeah i know anythings a plus :P) getting about 352k down on average so wondering besides the vast improvemnet on wifi whats the possible gains i may get on downloads.

Depends if you have a long line (what is your attentuation?) or reliability issues

Do you really mean 0.35Mb?

On a good line you don't need this router unless you want the features

nah im talking actual download speed, as for line length im probably around 4km's, straight line is about 2.5km's but being in a rural area with a nice bendy route (the main road) 4km's is probably closer to actual length.

lines fairly stable as far as drop outs, just looking at something with wifi that works and a possible gain in overal speed would be a nice bonus.

Hi matey, How do these profiles actually work? my downstream connection at the mo is
3296 kbps with a down stream noise margin of 7.2db, sky have me on a 4.6mb profile with a max delay of 8 and i must admit the longest connection time i have had is no longer than 24hrs. My downstream always changes between 3100kbps-3392kbps. Would the 4.6mb profile sky have me on and the max delay of 8 be what is causing my line to drop out all the time every evening? They tell me that the 4.6mb profile is the lowest profile they can give me if i want a max delay of 8 on my line. Line Attenuation is 60.5 on g.dmt

The information I posted was for BT wholesale (so quite a few ISP's)

For SKY are you LLU ?

Yea mate im on there LLU package

There are no profiles on LLU (thankfully).

Ask them to raise your max delays or reprofile your line if you are having disconnects.

Thanks for that mate but I still can't wrap my bloody head round it! Do I just have to port map or do I also have to enter a firewall rule as well? I've tried both and still can't get it to connect.

Do I have to create a fixed host for everything that's added to the network? Currently got a NAS/HTPC/Laptop and have a static IP for all of them.

I've followed several guides and still stuck. Got my old router back on so I'll have another bash tomorrow. I might have to do a factory reset and try again with a blank canvas.

If anyone can post some pics of their firewall and port mapping tabs I'd be able to see where I'm going wrong.

Guys,

Those of you that have taken advantage of the recent £89.99 price tag - what has your kit been like? I read somewhere, think it was on here, that the seller sometimes sends out slightly dubious stuff that has been opened, security seals broken etc.

I had my dispatch email today so I'm expecting mine at sometime tomorrow :D

Cheers mate, i spoke to sky today and they informed me i am on a 4.8mb profile with a max delay of 8ms, would having a max delay of 16ms help with frequent drop outs do you think? They told me they were kind of limited to what they could give me being on g.dmt and the 4.8mb profile was the lowest one they do with a max delay of 8ms

I'm thinking of ordering and would like to know this so please post. Surly you can send back at their expense if not as new?

The reviews online are all great but some of the comments on hear have put me off a little.

I have two computers on wired connections, 3-4 laptops, 2 iPhones and DNLA TV. Although no more than about 3-4 devices in total are used in anger at any one time the performance of my current device is woeful. I'm happy paying the money provided it delivers. I'm looking for good coverage and rock solid performance. Is there a better alternative at a similar price. I'd be happy to go to £150 if it was worth the extra.

Just received mine from the £89.99 place and it appears to be new. There is no security seal to be broken but it all looks above board to me. The only thing is the antennae's were just loose inside the box, not in a packet which seemed a bit strange but apart from that all seems good.

I think thats normal mate, when i purchesed mine for the original £109 the 3 antenna's just sit loose in the box in the 3 grooves so thats perfectly normal. Let us know how you get on with it tho wont you and remember to upgrade firmware to 1.06d from the UK billion site not the oz one :D and also apply and save ANY CHANGES easilly forgotton :)

Finally got it set up now. Was having a mare yesterday sorting out packet filtering etc but I must have had a nerd dream cos I woke up and sorted it out! Anyway, here are my stats:

I'm with BE and only about 1.5 km from the exchange but BT once told me my line was 11 km long so I could only expect to get about 1 meg speeds. This is almost a meg more than when I was using my netgear router so chuffed already. Is there much scope for me to tweak my SNR for more speed?

@zom247 not enough info to tell if you can tweak your SNR is not high ATM

Can you post full stats from telnet or Routerstats

I've tried following your example but I can't get it to work. When I click "get page" using source a I get html and source b just gives me some headers (status/firmware etc). I can get it to work with the lite version if that's any good? Also, how long do you need to run it for?

I have just ordered one of these (a refurbished one) £59 delivered. As my old netgear d834gt seemed to be resetting it's self a lot as of late, and it's quite a few years old. so should be here Monday with any luck.

Nice stats, keep an eye on the connection uptime on the main page, if it's stable for at least 24 hours, tweak the SNR down slightly ( see http://www.spaldwick.com/broadband/billion-7800n ). See if it holds for 24 hours and repeat. It's probably also worth keeping an eye on a running ping to 8.8.8.8 to watch for dropped packets.

Well i thought i had one for £59 delivered

The guy from the shop has just been on the phone, and someone had bought it a minute earlier and the stock had not updated.

Either that or they did not have one in the first place.

When you get the page you need to tell routerstats what to use. Let's take downstream sync as an example - just highlight that number (only) and click the relevant mark button on the right hand side labelled RX Sync
