About to build a rig-yes right now!
i want to try to catch some answers before the rest of the world sleeps

once ive put all the pieces in the case and power up for the first time, what will happen?????
, do i start on drivers for mobo? gfx card?, or hit DEL and straight into bios?
and what should i be setting the bios settings to when i get there?
thanks
S

Personally I go straigh into the BIOS and set the time/date, drive configurations and turn off whatever onboard stuff I'm not using. After that configure my RAID array before installing Windows.

go into Bios, detect Drives, set boot device to DVD or CD-Rom have windows CD in drive, install drivers, etc.

But first try and figure out why nothing appears on screen and why there's 1 long beep followed by 2 short ones when you power up! :p only kidding

Hit del go in to the bios and check everything is turned on and turned off etc. for example make sure raid is enabled if your using it, turn off stupid splash screens if it has them, turn onboard sound on, all that sort of stuff. If the comp is running fine dont **** round with the mem settings, cpu etc until you have a stable OS runing on it. That help or you want a more explicite guide?

definately helped, thanks
i'll definately be back in an hour or so, but worried no-one will be about!
So more detailed would be great, few flash points though

told i dont need to worry about "RAID"
do i literally turn on pc for 1st time, and hit del to get there
what do the things actually say that i should be turning off/on, and what stuff
and how do i check temperatures etc and make sure "everything is running fine"

N.B: thanks all-this is really helping, much appreciated :)

stuff i'm using below-gonna do most inputing outside case then put in

V770 alu case-side window etc
few fans/neons etc
tagen 620w psu
E6600
tunic tower 120
geil ddr2 pc6400 2gb
x1950 pro gfx card pci express
2x 250gb satas hdd's
2x pioneer 18xdvd-rw
ata 133 hdd caddy (via sata/ata 133 converter)
gigabyte DS4 mobo
Windows Vista premium

As soon as you've put it together hit power and (touch wood) it will load up and go through all the motherboard checks, if you do nothing it will try and load the OS from the hdd but it wont be there so it will just stop and say it coudn't find it.

Set the 1st boot device to cd rom, and alter the time, in theory thats all you 'need' to do to just get the OS working as your not using raid.

Depends whether you want to set your two hard disks up as a signle drive in RAID 0 (performance) or RAID 1 (redundancy), if not just leave them as two seperate drives.

When you first power up, press and hold the Delete key to take you into the BIOS.

now thats a question, there is a lot of different opinions on it. personally i spread a thin layer with a credit card but some people but a small blob in the middle and put the heatsink and twist slightly. theres a whole thread on it in the cooling section. the chocie is up to you, sorry not very helpfull

hmm, just blob and little spread i think then!

how about temp's-how do i check them-is tis in bios-wont bios things be set good as a default?

once you've turned it on and get into the bios one of the pages should display temps and voltages, and the bios should all be set for stock settings initally which is good .

around 40 - 60 is fine anything lower is brillent and anything under 70 is acceptable but prefrably under 60. Unless you've buggered somthin up at stock speeds it shouldn't be in 60s from fresh install.

ha! awesome-i just had time off, bought seies1-4 of scrubs, 10hrs per series, done 2 series straight, 12hrs sleep, then next 2 series straight-still lauging during the last episode!!!!!
